KuCoin’s Twitter Account Hacked and Lost More Than $22,000
You get the latest crypto news and updates on Twitter. Most people who are into crypto are active on Twitter. You are careful not to fall into hackers' traps. But when you see something from the official account of a crypto exchange, you usually believe that.
At least you can put trust in the official Twitter accounts of crypto companies with verified tickmarks. Looks like you cannot blindly trust anything even what you see on Twitter from some official accounts. If you act based on that without further investigation, you might fall into a trap.
KuCoin’s Twitter account was hacked for 45 minutes and hackers promoted a fake giveaway event that caused losing more than $22,000. It started from 00:00 April 24 (UTC+2) and Kucoin detected 22 transactions related to this incident. Due to this hack and fake giveaway promotion, users lost crypto assets which are worth 22,628 USDT.
The good thing is, crypto exchange Kucoin took control of its Twitter account quickly and promised to reimburse all affected users. They are doing more investigation into this hack by collaborating with Twitter.
Kucoin will take more action to tighten the security of its social media accounts to prevent anything like this in the future. Their other social media accounts and website are not affected due to this attack.
Kucoin's official Twitter account is not the first victim that hackers use to steal people's money. Cryptocurrency exchange CoinDCX’s Twitter account was hacked back in September 2022 where bad actors promoted fake XRP. Not only that, the trading platform Robinhood became a victim of an attack where hackers used the platform's Twitter account to promote fake Robinhood tokens.
When you see any announcement from the verified official Twitter account of any project or crypto company, it does not mean you can blindly trust it. That Twitter account can be compromised. There is a chance what you see comes from hackers.
People who become victims are not stupid. It comes in such a way you will not doubt it in the beginning. Hope no one falls into their traps. Watch out and stay safe.
