This curious amphibian is a harlequin toad (Atelopus cruciger), belongs to the Bufonidae family and is critically endangered; more than a decade ago it was considered extinct, due to multiple factors ranging from Chytridiomycosis to the loss of its habitat. But as Mother Nature is very wise, she used a last resort, a small population migrated and was able to adapt without major problems, away from all danger and thus be able to insure the species. Today its population is monitored and protected, the task of multiple institutes, researchers and conservation ngos. Remember extinction is forever.
