Surely it is not the friendliest or the most pleasant animal with the naked eye, it is likely that you will kiss it and it will not become the person you want; But the truth is that this Golden Toad (Rhaebo guttatus) is an indispensable and very valuable being in the rain forest, a nocturnal species associated with puddles or flood areas that belongs to the Bufonidae family, which integrates more than 600 species around of the world.
Toads in Venezuela are distributed in almost all ecosystems, from the lowlands in the plains or coastal range, to the Andean paramo or at the top of certain tepuis; they represent the main arthropod predators within the jungle. They have an external gland behind the eye and on the eardrum (parotoid gland) that groups and characterizes them, which they use as a defense method while secreting a whitish-looking toxic substance composed of alkaloids, including Bufotoxin.
