It's given when it comes to robberies, hostage negotiations, or even a terrorist attack, a tactical unit will come in to escalate while preparing for any potential threats within the situation. In the United States, they have S.W.A.T. In our country, it's either also S.W.A.T or the PNP's Special Action Force, United Kingdom's CTFSO of the Metropolitan Police, Germany's GSG-9. In Spain, they also have a police tactical unit featured on the TV Series La Casa de Papel (internationally known as Money Heist).

The title above translates to Special Operations Group - the police tactical group of Spain's Cuerpo Nacional de Policia. Like any tactical unit, they focus on protection detail, terrorist attacks, hijackings, maritime threats, and hostage situations. Founded in November 1977 to combat terrorism and organized crime in their country. Their first training course began the following year, then a selected group was sent to a GSG-9 base in San Agustin del Guadaix to train the new unit. Col. Ulrich Wegener, one of the founding members of the GSG-9 along with his unit shouldered everything from their training, the equipment, and techniques they would apply in their operations.

Their first action was on February 7, 1981, in the City of Bilbao - Banco Bilbao Vizcaya. Five hostages were freed from their captors. No one was injured. Zero casualties. They also rescued Dr. Iglesias Puga and disrupt any attempts of the Euskadi Ta Askatasuna for attacking the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. GEO suffered casualties - 5 operators died while 1 wounded during the Madrid bombings of March 11, 2004, as they found themselves trapped and took their lives by detonating around their hideout at Legan├ęs.

Currently, GEO is still active to this day. To join the group, the officer should have served the Cuerpo Nacional de Policia for 2 years, and at least one expertise of the following skills: martial arts, scuba diving, marksmanship, explosives, and previously worked with one of the operative groups in the provincial capitals. Candidates must pass the trials first, from physical fitness to psychological tests. Then, a specialization course in Guadalajara, Spain where there are 4 areas they need to master: instrumental, juridical, socio-professional, and police sciences & techniques.
