December 20, 2020. Paniqui, Tarlac. An off-duty police officer investigates a loud noise coming from the distance. He tried to arrest the one who's making the noise. Out of his frustration. He shot both unarmed civilians. The worst part? The cop's daughter is in front of her. The video went viral around social media, and people around shouted for justice against the perpetrator.
The Victims? Frank Gregorio, 25 years old, and Sonya Gregorio, 52 years old. Both victims were shot dead by off-duty officer Sr. MSgt. Jonel Nuezca.
What Happened?
I would like to share the video, but for this one, I'm not going to share it with you since it is very disturbing for me, it is very graphic content that would lead to unpublish this article, or else the bots or moderators would also find disturbing, even for you who's reading this right now, and I guess most of you seen it. Around 5:10 pm, Jonel investigates a loud noise while off-duty. It was an improvised cannon called boga, made of bamboo or a PVC Pipe which makes a powerful sound comparing to a cannon. It doesn't load any projectiles and commonly used to celebrate New Year's Eve. Now, bogas are not allowed to use during the festivities of New Year's Eve.
Jonel tried to arrest Frank, but Sonya intervened. Tragedy strikes since the cop got frustrated and shoots them point-blank range using his police-issued pistol. Jonel's daughter was in front and present at the scene of the crime.
The Aftermath?
A video was recorded and uploaded around social media. It became viral, a piece of strong evidence (but it wasn't presented yet as evidence stated by PNP Chief Debold Sinas) against the off-duty officer, and netizens around the nation, even the whole world were in shock because of this incident. 6:19 pm an hour after the incident, Jonel Nuezca voluntarily surrenders to the Rosales Police Station in Pangasinan. Officers from Paniqui picked him up and now under their custody.
Sr. MSgt. Jonel Nuezca is facing two counts of murder filed by prosecutors in the province of Tarlac, and the government promised that justice will be given to the victims. Aside from this, Nuezca has a history of previous administrative cases that were dropped & closed, even suspension orders were placed. He admits and regrets what he did. Jonel's daughter was turned over to legal counsel.
Both victims were now laid to rest, the case remains open, the family and the rest of the nation shouts for justice. If the government doesn't act fast, there will be delays in this case. Some officers are loyal to their badge, the flag, their solemn duty. Others will try to commit crimes that would result in a bad image for our police officers.
