Aside from the Investor announcement of Disney+'s new projects from Marvel to the Star Wars universe. One announcement made by Disney is a new movie about Buzz Lightyear before he'll become the galaxy's greatest hero, a new storyline will be set focused on Buzz, and Tim Allen will no longer reprise the role of everyone's beloved Space Ranger. Chris Evans was selected to give the voice of Lightyear.
Now, before this upcoming movie which we'll explore Buzz's backstory in 2022. When this was announced a few days ago, I remember there was a direct-to-video film, a television series, and a video game about our favorite Space Ranger. I know you remember it back then.
It all started with Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins, released in 2000 which was a direct-to-video film which is a pilot episode of the same title in the television series, and a spin-off after the events of Toy Story 2. The premise was how Buzz lost his partner Warp Darkmatter in an explosion after rescuing 3 Little Green Men (LGMs). Refused to take a new partner by his superior Commander Nebula assigning Mira Nova as her new partner, and XR - the eXperimental Ranger created by the LGMs. Until the Unimind was captured by Zurg's forces and Buzz is on a mission to retrieve the corrupted Unimind against Evil Emperor Zurg with the help of his new teammates, Mira Nova, XR, and Booster. This was only Pixar's involvement with the project using traditional animation.
After the events of the animation film, the television series follows the lead character with his new partners under his wing to protect the universe against Zurg's forces of evil. It spanned over 65 episodes (including the animated film as 3 parts) and it was a commercial success for Pixar Animated Studios. The video game was released also in the same year as you control Buzz chasing Zurg's henchmen, and beat them using color-coded weapons.
The moment I'm writing this and searching these as references, it took me back to those days. Life was very simple, no smartphones, no social media, no streaming services since those things are under development. I was able to watch the animated film, the TV series and I also played the video game. It took me back 20 years ago and I was only 8 years old at that time. It is very nostalgic for me, and a great move for Disney that we'll see everyone's favorite Space Ranger again on the big screen. Now, aside from Buzz and Evil Emperor Zurg, are we'll be able to see other characters on the big screen? From Mira Nova, XR, Booster, Commander Nebula, Warp Darkmatter, the Little Green Men? I guess you know the answer to that. To infinity... and beyond!
