Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán Villalobos (02-18-1924 / 03-17-1999) was a renowned Venezuelan doctor and scientist who invented the diamond-tipped scalpel for which he received the Vovain Prize in 1967.
Dr Fernández-Morán contributed to the development of the electron microscope, was the founder of the Venezuelan Institute of Neurology and Brain Research (IVNIC), the predecessor of the current IVIC.
Dr. Humberto Fernández-Morán Villalobos was Minister of Education at the end of the government of Marcos Evangelista Pérez Jiménez, which forced him to leave Venezuela at the fall of this in 1958 due to the persecution of the new government and his scientific contributions were vetoed.
During his exile he worked as a research professor at the University of Chicago, he was one of the scientists who contributed the most to the development of the NASA project.
Apart from Spanish, he spoke Swedish, French and German, he died in Stockholm, Sweden, his body was cremated and his ashes rest in the El Cuadrado Cemetery in his hometown in the state of Zulia.
