Sadness is an emotion that has a bad reputation in our society and is often categorized as weakness or depression. In the film, Inside Out, it shows its viewers what is happening in the mind of an 11-year-old girl, Riley. At the beginning of the film, Joy admits that she doesn’t understand what Sadness is for or why it’s even in Riley’s head when sadness is introduced. At one point in life, many of us have probably questioned the purpose of sadness and why we need it because it makes us feel terrible tricking us into thinking we might be depressed. Sadness is literally the very definition and being of sorrow and gloom. She is hardly ever used because Joy is the boss and doesn 't want Riley to ever be sad, even when Riley needs to be. Because of this, Joy treats Sadness very unfairly. Secretly, however, Sadness yearns to earn her place among the other emotions, even though the others do not believe Sadness has a purpose in the mind and almost always prevent her from trying. She is the most sensitive out of all the emotions, as she felt genuinely hurt by Joy 's abandonment because Riley needs to be happy, which made poor Sadness feel she was truly useless and unneeded.

People who are not depressed or have never come to contact with clinical depression, are more often than not inclined to judge someone who is clinically depressed and call them dramatic, self-indulgent, or even worse tell them that they are just “under the weather.” Diagnosed clinical depression is not something that one can just shrug off, in fact it’s a disease that will cause the mental health state of an individual to decrease. Though depression isn’t something one can physically see like the flu, depression causes the patient to feel the effects as if it were a physical disorder. These symptoms include but are not limited to, fatigue, muscle aches headaches, etc. Though sadness can also cause an individual to feel these symptoms, sadness is temporary. Whereas depression, lingers and tends to become part of the patient’s everyday life, like a best friend. Though everyone at some point in their lives will experience sadness, the underlying question of why some people experience sadness that leads into full on depression remains.

“I do believe that if you haven’t learnt about sadness, you cannot appreciate happiness.” I came up with this quote during her singing career, when a fan asked her how she came to be such an amazing singer. I mentioned that she had a lot of rough patches along the way with managers dropping her, but in the end, she ended up on top. In other words, it will be easier to appreciate the good times if you’ve already been through bad times. This quote is appealing because it applies to a variety of situations. Every person has hard times, and every person has happy times, but this quote could bring the two together. Therefore, many people would agree with this quote. Many different people lived by this quote, and they ended up appreciating the good times more after they went through the bad ones. One person that followed this quote is Nelson Mandela; He worked hard through legal troubles, relationship problems, and accusations for something he wanted for a long time.
