Mangyans in the Philippines

The indigenous peoples of the Island of Mindoro or we usually called is Mangyan.

Mangyan is a group of people in the Island of Mindoro which has 8 groups that also has different lifestyle and tradition in every part of Mindoro.

Ratagnon

They live in the southern part of Magsaysay in Occidental Mindoro. They have the similar language in Visayan Cuyunon in Northern palawan. Ratagnon women wears a wrap around cotton cloth from their waistline to their knees and their mens still wears a traditional g-string. The womens breast is covering is made of vine or woven nito. They also wear their favorite accessories made with beads and copper wire.

Hanunuo

The Hanunuo Mangyans live in the Mansalay, Bulalacao and some part of Bongabong in Oriental Mindoro. Hanunuo clothing (Rutay) is the most important thing to know what kind of group they are belong. A Hanunuo-Mangyan male wears a baag and a balukas, the womens wear short skirt (ramit) and a blouse (lambung). Their traditional of mens is Long haired Hanunuo-Mangyan, in womens also long haired but with beads and accessories.

Buhid

They are known as the Pot makers in Island of Mindoro. Buhid means "mountain dwellers". They live in Roxas, Bungsud, Bongabong im Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro.Buhid women wears a woven black and white, but unmarried women wears a body ornament such as braided belt. Their men wears g-strings. Bothh of them uses an accessories like bag, comb and knife.

Bangon

They are living in the Bingabon river called Binagaw in Bongabong, Oriental Mindoro. they have their own culture, language and writing system. They are considered as the seventh major tribe in the Island of Mindoro.

Tau-buid

They are know as Pipe makers, even the childrens their is smoking at the young age. They are wearing the standard dress for men and women. Their cloth is made by extracting, pounding and drying several trees there. They are living in Socorro and Pinamalayan in Occidental Mindoro.

Tadyawan

They are living in different places in Mindoro such like in Naujan, Socorro, Bansud and Pola. Their women wears a red cloth called paypay and talapi for the coverings of their waist. Their men wears g-strings called abay. The are wearing colorful accessories like bracelets and necklaces made with beads. On theurs food, they are depending in their kaingin if what is available.

Alangan

They are living in some parts of Mindoro also which is Naujan, Baco and Victoria. The name Alangan was came from the name of a river and mountains called Alangan Valley. Their women wears a traditionally skirt called lingeb this is made from forest vine. Their men wears g-strings with fringes. TheseMangyans are practiced by a swidden farming.

Iraya

They are living in some parts of Orientals Mindoro but most of them is living in Occidental Mindoro. Thay are described as having a curly or wavy hair and dark skin but not so much dark like Negritos. They are moslty skilled in doing things like weaving and handicrafts. They make plates, cups, trays and jars with different sizes and designs.
