The Luckiest Girl Alive

In a biography on actress Elizabeth Taylor, author Richard Billings noted that his subject was one of the most unlucky people he had ever met. He went on to describe how Taylor had broken her leg, lost her fortune and nearly died several times in her life. As someone who writes about luck, I found this observation intriguing. I also wondered why some people seem to be more lucky than others whether it's something innate or something learned. The notion that luck is a choice resonates with the subject of this essay. In thinking about Elizabeth Taylor's life, consider how character can shape luck and how lucky people learn to maintain an even keel amid their many blessings.

Although some believe that the Lucky Girl is born into riches, it's more likely that she learns early on that being lucky makes people Osmo. Being lucky is a mindset and learning to think positively can help you handle the good and bad things in life. Some famous lucky people learn this early in their careers; Oprah Winfrey learned at age 25 that she could choose which thoughts she would allow into her mind. She learned to keep negative ones out and to look for ways to turn her adversities into blessings. However, the Lucky Girl's outlook isn't always so positive of tuberculosis. The Lucky Girl's recurring negative character trait, will do just that no matter what the lucky girl thinks.

While most would define 'lucky' as something good happening without effort, the Lucky Girl would clearly define 'lucky' as something good happening without effort. For example, one of the Lucky Girl's main lessons is how she has handled adversity, including her childhood polio and her late mother's grief over losing both parents in a car accident when she was young. The Lucky Girl recalls a time when she was five years old and pleading with God not to let her get sick like her mother did when she contracted tuberculosis (a recurring negative character trait). During this moment of self-awareness, the Lucky Girl realized that sitting inside for months on end while everyone else enjoyed outdoor summer activities only exacerbated her condition and made it harder to fight off TB. However, although she learned this lesson at age five, it wasn't until much later that she learned not to fight the things she could not change; this includes the poor health caused by constant relapsing and remitting tuberculosis.

The Lucky Girl learned from her childhood that it's beneficial to face problems without becoming angry or upset. At a young age, she realized that staying inside during everyone else's outdoor activities exacerbated her condition, whereas going outside aggravated everyone else's conditions even more. By learning this lesson early on, the Lucky Girl became strong enough to overcome many other life challenges she has faced since then. This includes surviving Hollywood while coping with chronic dysentery and coping with Taylor's relationship with Hollywood while coping with being married to a philandering husband 20 years her elder. Although many think being lucky means living a charmed life free from problems. In reality, it means learning how to spot problems early on so you can address them head on and remain strong amid your many blessings.
