Maria had always felt a special connection to the earth. Ever since she was a little girl, she dreamed of becoming an archaeologist and discovering the secrets that the past held beneath her feet. Now, in the arid Atacama Desert, her dream had come true. The expedition had begun like any other, with the excitement of unearthing forgotten stories, but one day, while digging near an ancient indigenous settlement, her shovel hit something hard.

“What did you find, Maria?” asked Javier, her research partner, as he curiously approached.

“An artifact... it looks ancient,” she replied, feeling her heart race. Carefully, she began to unearth the object. It was oval and covered in strange inscriptions that glowed faintly in the desert sun.

The artifact took her breath away. As she wiped it with a soft cloth, the inscriptions began to reveal themselves: they spoke of the creation of the universe by a divine entity, describing a cosmos full of life and energy.

“This is incredible,” Javier murmured, staring at the inscriptions in awe. “Do you think this could change everything we know about history?”

Maria nodded slowly, but an uneasiness began to grow inside her. “I'm not sure if we're ready for what this implies.”

As she delved deeper into her research in the camp lab, she began to feel a growing pressure. Dr. Elena Torres, the team leader and known for her extreme skepticism toward the supernatural, was quick to show her disdain.

“Maria, we cannot afford to fall into the trap of fantasies,” Elena warned her in a meeting. “This artifact must be analyzed scientifically. We cannot let our beliefs cloud our judgment.”

“But... what if there's more here than we can see?” retorted Maria, feeling the tension rising in the room.

Elena stared at her. “Science must be our guide. We cannot allow our emotions to lead us to the wrong conclusions.”

The nights became increasingly unsettling for Maria. As she reviewed her notes under the dim light of a lamp, she felt a presence beside her. It was as if the artifact was communicating with her. The inscriptions seemed to come alive in her mind.

“Maria?” asked Javier as he entered the tent. “I've been looking for you. You seem... different.”

“I can't explain it,” she said in a shaky voice. “It's like the artifact is talking to me.”

Javier's gaze turned serious. “You have to be careful. This place may be full of dark secrets.”

The tension increased when a mysterious phenomenon began to occur at the camp: strange lights appeared in the night sky and some team members claimed to have heard whispers in the dark.

One night, while everyone was gathered around a campfire, one of the younger archaeologists shouted, “I saw something! A figure among the rocks!”

Elena frowned. “We can't get carried away with superstitions.”

But Maria couldn't ignore the growing feeling inside her. “What if there is something beyond our comprehension? What if this artifact is a bridge to something unknown?”

The tension culminated when they decided to perform a ritual to try to communicate with the entity mentioned in the inscriptions on the artifact. In the middle of the starry desert, they formed a circle and began reciting the inscriptions.

The air became thick and cold; a vibration ran through the ground. Lights began to dance above them and a deep echo resounded in their minds.

“Maria!” cried Javier as he fell to the ground, trembling. “We can't go on!”

“We must go on!” she exclaimed with determination.

At that instant, the artifact emitted a blinding flash and everyone was paralyzed by the light. When it dissipated, they found themselves in a completely different landscape: a vast stellar ocean surrounded by floating ethereal figures.

“Where are we?” murmured Elena in a trembling voice.

“This... this is what the artifact wanted to show us,” Maria said in amazement.

But before they could process what was happening, the figures began to approach and whisper incomprehensible words in an ancient language. Time seemed to stand still as they each faced their own fears and longings.

Suddenly, everything went dark again and the archaeologists awoke in their original camp, but the artifact was gone.

“Was it real?” asked Javier in a daze.

“I don't know,” Maria replied, her eyes full of uncertainty. “But I feel like we touched something bigger than us.”

As they looked up at the starry sky, a fleeting flash crossed the night and all three felt a shiver run down their spines. The question hung in the air: had they been chosen to learn an ancient secret or had they been warned about something much darker?

The mystery remained unsolved as the desert wind whispered distant echoes of infinity.

Days after the strange event, Maria could not stop thinking about what had happened. She felt trapped between two worlds: one where logic and science reigned supreme and another where the unknown lurked like a persistent shadow.

One night she decided to go out alone into the desert to reflect on all that had happened. As she walked under the starry sky, she remembered the inscriptions on the artifact: *"In the beginning was the light... ”* Her thoughts were interrupted by a faint glow that appeared among the rocks.

Cautiously he approached it and saw something familiar: it was a part of the artifact he had thought lost forever. His heart pounded as he picked it up; it was warm to the touch and vibrated gently in his hands.

Suddenly, she felt a presence behind her. She turned quickly and saw Javier emerging from the shadows.

“Maria! I was looking for you,” he gasped. “You shouldn't be here alone.”

“Javier... I found this,” she replied showing him the glowing fragment.

At that moment, an intense light illuminated the desert and they were both transfixed by the overwhelming beauty of the celestial spectacle before them: dancing constellations and ethereal figures emerged from the horizon.

“This... this is impossible,” Javier stammered as he fell to his knees before the magnificence of the spectacle.

Maria felt a powerful energy coursing through her body; it was as if the entire universe was calling her home.

Suddenly, the ethereal figures began to form words in the air: *"The cycle has not ended... ”* The voice echoed deep within their minds.

Javier looked at Maria with fear reflected in his eyes, “What does that mean?”

Before she could answer him, they were both engulfed by a blinding light again; this time it seemed to suck them inward.

When they finally regained their sight, they found themselves back in their original camp; however, everything seemed different: the colors were more vivid and the sounds were clearer; they could even hear distant murmurs that seemed to come from the wind itself.

“Are we... dreaming?” asked Javier incredulously.

“I don't think so,” Maria said slowly as she watched small lights begin to float around them like dancing fireflies.

And then they understood: they were not alone; something was watching them from the shadows of the eternal desert; something that had been waiting for this moment for millennia.

As they gazed at the horizon illuminated by twinkling stars and dancing lights, they both knew they had crossed an invisible boundary between the known and the unknown; they had touched something as old as time itself.

However, before they could process everything that had happened, they heard one last whisper floating in the air: *"The real journey is just beginning... ”*.

With that phrase echoing in their minds and hearts filled with wonder and uncertainty at the unknown that awaited them, Maria and Javier knew that their lives would never be the same again; they had been chosen to explore the infinite mysteries of the cosmos... or perhaps to be part of something even greater and more terrifying than they could ever imagine.
