Short story: It was an unusual scene, deeply unusual

-Do you see it? -she asked with a mixture of astonishment and repulsion.

-Yes, I see it," he replied, without looking away from the object of his curiosity.

-It looks extremely unpleasant.

-It's obvious, don't you think?

-And even repulsive.

-So what does it matter?

-Are you really going to touch that?

-Ummm... Let me think about it," he said, in a tone of voice that denoted both doubt and fascination.

-You're crazy.

-Crazy you," he replied with a mocking smile.

-You're a pig.

-Shut up!

The laughter resounded in loud guffaws, coming from the girl accompanying our protagonist, a boy who stared, with a magnifying glass in hand, at the fungus that had recently appeared on the tree at the back of his home.

-It's definitely fascinating," he muttered, his scientific curiosity overcoming any initial disgust.

-You're a moron," she snapped at him, though without malice.

-Go to sleep yourself!

-And what are you going to do with that?

The boy began to touch it with his fingertips, noting that it was soft to the touch, and not slimy as he had anticipated. Then, with a sudden decision, he decided to tear it off.

-You're completely crazy," she said, though her tone revealed more interest than disapproval.

The boy stared at her, his eyes half-closed, communicating without words that he did not care for her opinion.

-Then eat it," she challenged him.

He found the idea tempting, so he put the mushroom in his mouth to start chewing and tasting it. Magical colors and strange sounds enveloped him, making him feel like he was on an extrasensory journey, where the things around him lost their defined shapes to become abstractions. Everything was moving, nothing was static. He no longer knew where he was up or down. It was madness. He felt his body as light as a feather, unable to experience physical pain, and then....

-Momaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! -he screamed, and when he opened his eyes he realized he was in a hospital.

The boy's eyes were so wide open that they looked like two fried eggs, as he looked around him, still under the effects of the hallucinogenic mushroom.

Everyone around him watched in amazement, thanking heaven that the boy had come to his senses and that he might get better if he kept his rest; everyone except his cousin, who laughed out loud at the sight of her cousin looking completely unhinged.
