Short story: Exploring the Unconscious: A Journey of Self-Discovery
Today I woke up with a strange sensation, similar to that experienced when the senses are altered. I felt disoriented, unable to immediately recognize where I was. I had a bad taste in my mouth, my vision was blurred and my body was heavy. Despite the pleasant climate in the room, I felt slightly sweaty. The overwhelming silence might lead anyone to think that the atmosphere was conducive to a restful sleep, but nothing could be further from the truth; as I regained lucidity, I began to remember why this had not been the case.
I made a mental effort to recall what had happened in my dream, asking myself a series of questions and conjuring up random images to help me associate possible scenarios and characters. Suddenly, memories emerged: the color green, plants, a clear sky, a bright sun, tranquility and solitude. Elements that were beginning to shape a place. I also remembered that I could only see my hands and feet, and I felt an imperious need to look for something that I could not define, but that I had to find at any cost.
I began to take my first steps, and after an indeterminate amount of time, I began to explore my surroundings. As I went deeper into the forest, an enveloping sound began to echo around me. It was deafening, but at the same time soft, with a frequency that fluctuated between low and high notes in short intervals. My ear was alert. Once I got my bearings, I continued on my way, and the sound intensified. I was alert to what might happen around me, and in the distance, I saw a creature moving slowly back and forth.
When I finally felt that I had found what I was looking for, I started running towards this strange creature. As I got closer, I realized that it was some kind of bird, although its appearance was peculiar: its head was the size of an American soccer, and its legs, similar to those of a bird, were twice as long as those of an average person. Its body, however, was extraordinary, with an internal structure that resembled a spring, a spiral that spun repeatedly, almost hypnotically.
The animal behaved calmly, showing no fear; rather, it seemed to invite me to approach. It was staring at me, and the sound had stopped. It was just the two of us. This gave me a strange confidence, but also a great expectation of what might happen. Inside me, I felt the need to do something, to not just watch this vortex of bright, vibrant colors.
Hypnosis enveloped me. I could not think, I just looked without blinking, and it revealed indescribable things, elements I had never seen before and that filled me with uneasiness. Everything was beautiful and fascinating, a whole new world that I wanted to access. So I decided to raise my hand and touch with my fingers her body, if it could be called that, that portal that would lead me to the unknown.
I slowly entered, despite my nerves, and in that instant, my body and my consciousness began to transform. It was as if my whole being was unaligned and changed its appearance to adopt a new one. Thus began my transmutation, a process that took me from darkness to light.
After narrating this experience, the psychologist, with an understanding look, began to offer her interpretation. “What you have shared is fascinating and deeply symbolic,” she said. “From a Freudian perspective, dreams are a window into our unconscious, where desires, fears and inner conflicts manifest.
The forest, for example, can represent the unconscious itself, a place of exploration and self-discovery. The creature you encountered, with its unusual characteristics, could symbolize aspects of yourself that you have not fully recognized or accepted. The hypnosis you experienced while observing it suggests that there are elements in your life that attract you, but also generate anxiety or confusion.
Your search for something undefined may reflect a search for meaning or purpose in your life. The transformation you felt at the end of the dream could be indicative of a desire for change or a new stage in your life. In short, this dream could be a manifestation of your deepest desires and the need to confront and accept parts of yourself that have remained hidden. What do you think about this interpretation?”
The psychologist looked at me with interest, inviting me to reflect on the meaning of my experience and how I could apply it to my daily life.
After listening to the psychologist's interpretation, I remained silent for a few moments, reflecting on her words. She was right, this dream was much more than just a sequence of random images; it was a window into my own unconscious, a manifestation of my desires, fears and inner conflicts.
Slowly, I began to speak, sharing my own reflections on the dream and how they resonated with my current life. “I think it makes sense what you're saying. I've been feeling a little lost lately, like I'm searching for something but don't know exactly what. Maybe it's a sign that I need to explore deeper within myself, confront those parts of myself that I've kept hidden.”
The psychologist nodded with understanding. “It's a brave and necessary process. Sometimes our dreams show us the way, but it is we who must make the decision to follow it. What do you say we explore a little more about that creature and what it represents to you? Maybe we can find some clues about what your unconscious is trying to tell you.”
I nodded with determination. “I'm ready to face whatever this dream has to teach me. If I've learned anything, it's that I can't run away from myself. It's time to accept all parts of my being, even the strangest or most unsettling.”
The session continued with a deep and revealing dialogue. As we explored the symbols and meanings of the dream, I began to have a clearer understanding of myself and the challenges I faced. It was a difficult process, but also liberating. I felt I was taking the first steps toward a personal transformation, one that would take me from darkness to light, just as I had experienced in my dream.
When I finally left the psychologist's office, I felt different, as if a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I knew the road ahead would not be easy, but I was determined to face it with courage and honesty. This dream had been a gift, an opportunity to look inside myself and begin to heal the parts of myself that had been ignored or repressed.
With a new determination, I set off towards my next destination, knowing that each step I took brought me closer to the person I wanted to be. The forest of the unconscious still awaited me, but this time, I was ready to explore its depths and discover the treasures hidden within.
