Short story: Accident in the street: A Lesson for Sofia

The roar of the crash interrupted the quiet morning on the street. A speeding car had violently rammed the elderly vendor's fruit stand, scattering avocados and oranges all over the pavement.

Sofia, a young journalism intern at a major local newspaper, was a few blocks away when she heard the impact. Her journalistic instinct prompted her to run to the scene, camera in hand, to cover the story.

When she arrived, she saw the vendor lying on the ground, apparently injured. A woman who witnessed everything approached Sofia, visibly upset:

- It was terrible. The car was coming at full speed and could not brake. The poor man had no chance to get out of the way.

At that moment, a man in a suit and tie, who appeared to be an executive, approached the scene of the accident.

- Did someone call an ambulance? - he asked urgently.

- Not yet," Sofia replied. But the salesman needs medical attention immediately.

The executive pulled out his phone and quickly dialed the emergency number.

Meanwhile, a young college student, who had witnessed the whole thing from across the street, approached Sofia.

- What recklessness! That driver should go to jail for what he did," she exclaimed indignantly.

Sofia nodded and began to gather more testimonies. A young man commented:

- I saw everything. The driver was going like crazy, he didn't respect the stop sign. I hope the salesman is okay.

The university student added:

- It's a pity that this happened. I hope the vendor recovers soon.

Sofia also managed to obtain the license plate of the vehicle involved and some photographs of the accident scene. Satisfied with the information gathered, she returned to the newspaper's newsroom.

However, when she presented her report to the editor, he looked at it seriously and said to her:

- Sofia, this accident, while regrettable, is not news of public interest. Our readers expect more relevant and impactful stories. I suggest you find a more substantial topic for your next coverage.

Sofia, disappointed but determined, responded:

- I understand your point of view, but I think this incident also deserves to be told. It shows the recklessness of some drivers and the consequences they can have.

The editor, with a thoughtful gesture, nodded.

Sofia, excited by the opportunity, left the office. Although the incident did not turn out to be big news, she took it as a valuable lesson for her career. She was determined to prove her talent and become an outstanding journalist.
