As human beings, we have the need to belong to a group where we can find an identity and feel part of something bigger. An urban tribe is nothing more than a group of people who share interests, tastes and hobbies, and who come together to socialize, share their passion and have a sense of belonging. In this essay, I will explain why a person might want to be part of an urban tribe and the advantages this might offer.

First, an urban tribe provides a sense of community. Most tribes have a strong shared culture and values, which makes people feel that they finally found a place where they belong. As a result, people feel less lonely and isolated in society. They can find people with whom they can talk and share their common interests, which makes people feel positive and enriched.

Second, being part of an urban tribe offers learning opportunities. Many tribes have a particular passion and a wealth of knowledge in their field. By being part of an urban tribe, people have the opportunity to share and learn more about their interest. In addition, these tribes often organize events and activities related to the topic, which provides the opportunity to experience and learn more about the interest.

Third, an urban tribe can offer opportunities for personal growth. People can join a tribe to confront their fears or challenges. For example, joining an athletics tribe can help people have a healthier lifestyle, while joining a writing tribe can help people explore their creativity and self-expression.

Now, among the most popular tribes we have: otakus, geeks, nerds, geeks; which will be detailed below:

  • Otaku: It is a term of Japanese origin that refers to a person who is a big fan of Japanese popular culture, particularly anime and manga. It is associated with an obsession with these subjects and can be considered a subculture. It can often be distinguished by their appearance as they dress in a characteristic way, with clothes with anime or manga characters, for example.

  • Friki: This term may be an adaptation to Spanish of "freak" (weird, eccentric). It refers to a person with hobbies considered out of the ordinary, such as pop culture, video games, comics, science fiction or fantasy movies, among others. In general, it is associated with a person who is passionate and dedicated to a particular subject, although they may have other diverse interests.

  • Geek: A geek is usually considered to be someone who is very knowledgeable about technological subjects, such as computers, electronics and programming, among others. They may be interested in hardware and/or software, and have advanced knowledge in these subjects. Although some may think it is a synonym for nerd, in reality a geek is usually considered to be someone who is more passionate about technologies and their practical applications than about the theory itself.

  • Nerd: Generally associated with someone dedicated to study and learning in multiple areas, often related to science and mathematics. It is seen as a person who is highly intelligent, but who can often be seen as socially awkward or maladjusted in other areas. Unlike a geek, a nerd may be less interested in the practical applications of technology than in the theory behind it.

And among all of the above, which one do you identify with? Leave your comment in the comments section and I'll be glad to read it and give you answers.

Until next time, friends.
