3 movies about the Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a bloody struggle that took place between the 60s and 70s of the twentieth century. This war was waged by the United States inside Vietnam in order to stop the advances of communism on that side of the world, from which Uncle Sam's army did not come out well at the end of the conflict. That is why some time later the Hollywood industry approached this issue critically under the eyes of several of its directors such as Oliver Stone, Francis Ford Coppola, Stanley Kubrick, among others. Below we will mention several of these film productions that touch this subject in a crude and dramatic way, among which we have:
Born on the Fourth of July
The protagonist is a young boy from a small town who is about to graduate from high school and decides to enlist in the army of his nation under patriotic ideals; and once he enters the scene of events such as the Vietnam War, he realizes that things are not as they seem, but when he is seriously wounded and even worse when he seriously injures one of his companions wrongly. Some time later, when he returns home, he notices that everything has changed and that many of his friends who did not go to war have done well in life, and that his family no longer treats him as before because of the war and also because of the fact that he is disabled. All this will push him to rethink many things in his life and the sense of taking new ideas to fight for his country.
Apocalypse Now
A young captain of the U.S. Army is called to take a mission, in which he must find and capture a colonel who has deserted from the army and has taken over a small village with its inhabitants who in turn worship him as a god. The captain will undertake this journey into the jungle of this country through a river accompanied by other soldiers, but as they go deeper into the place they will notice that everything becomes darker as far as human behavior is concerned.
Platoon
This film is based on Oliver Stone's personal experiences of fighting during the Vietnam War, as the director of Born on the Fourth of July. Here he tells the story of a young man who goes to the battlefield, and who not only faces the Vietcong army but also the quarrels between command that exist in his own army, the moral debacle, and his internal conflicts as a young middle class man who finds himself in the midst of men from the poorest sectors of his country.
