Are you familiar with Kdrama? If yes, have you watched Netflix’s “Squid Game”? if not, well here’s a little review for you.
“Squid Game” is a Korean drama with a genre of drama, thriller and horror fiction. It was created by a Korean creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk and composed by Jung Jae-il. mIt is one of the best Korean drama in Netflix and the casts are Lee Jung-jae; Park Hae-soo; Wi Ha-joon; Jung Ho-yeon; O Yeong-su; Heo Sung-tae; Anupam Tripathi and Kim Joo-ryoung. It is one of the Box Office Hit of Netflix and I think they made many money after it’s release along with the Japanese Drama/Series “Alice In Borderland”. After it was released, many people have even more known about Korean dramas or “Kdramas”as well. It made the korean culture even more well known to non-korean citizens together with the korean popular group Bangtan Sonyeondan or BTS. It just not represented Korean pride but also Asian pride, as for me. After the followed by the korean movie “Parasite” on 2019, it was one of the biggest pride of Koreans as well.
As time goes by, people are able to recognize the drama “Squid Game” and people made even a trend out of it; like making a parody of it or reenactment of some the memorable scenes from the drama, even memes, although memes have already existed, still it was a brig break for them; for the creator, the actors and actresses, the staffs as well and all the production. The efforts of each person who were involved in the movie, the great directing and the best acting skills of the actors and actresses and don’t forget the biggest plot twist at the end. I even heard that they will be releasing a season 2 which what the fans have been waiting and anticipating since they (the production) left them (fans hanging in the end. Many people found the drama with mixed emotions: disappointment, hatred towards some characters (which the actor and actress did a good job in acting as antagonists), relieved (that the old man in the end was not dead), and also felt betrayed because of the old man’s stunt being the mastermind in the end and that one character who lied and set the guy to die, who trusted him the most. Pity towards the protagonist since after he went home and knowing his mother died, without him being their for her. The drama also shows how people will be trying to survive and showing a lot of different point of views of different persons.
As the popularity of the drama arises, many people have criticized it as well. Saying that the plot was the same as the Japanese drama “Alice in Borderland” and movie “As The God’s Will”, which is also made by a Japanese creator. Other people kept on comparing “Squid Game” to these Japanese movie and drama. Although, the plot is kind of same, since all of the three were played with children’s game by each country, if you have watched all the three, which I have, since I really admire how both Japanese and Korean make films like, they make it without not giving some life lessons to their viewers. As for “Squid Game”, it made us realize some things through the different point of views of the characters. For example, that one character who was betrayed by the only person he trust; the guy switched his pebbles to him to have an even number of pebbles than him, to win and not die (sorry I kinda suck in explaining), to make it short, yeah the guy he trusted the most let him die. Also, in the protagonists point of view, regret on of not being with his one and only family member; his mother. Money can’t always make you happy, sometimes, just being there with your family and staying by there side always matter, although I understand that he just did that to find money not just for his mother’s medicine but also to be a deserving father for his daughter, that having much money can make him a good father since he’ll be able to afford getting his daughter to study and won’t need to go to a farther school to get a better education and be with her.
Sometimes, the mistakes that we make are not always the mistake that we expected to be ruining us, mostly, it; the mistake itself, are there not just to ruin us but to give us life lessons and make and will help us make our decisions in the future better and for us not to make mistakes again and regret. As for me, about the issue that the film “Squid Game” was a “copy” of “As The God’s Will” and “Alice in Borderland”, the Korean creator clarified and admitted that the drama was based also from the movies that he have watched but that doesn’t mean that he “copied” it, obviously because the movies/drama consists of different children games base on each national cultures and also, the creator have said that “Squid Game” was already made and planned many years ago and it was just released this year, so that the issue will die down and not cause a bigger problem for them.
I haven't watched that yet. 😄
