History of Clothe Hanger
Storage is an important component in the care and maintenance of clothing. Clothes that are hang, suspended in an appropriate manner from a hanger, is an effective method of storing clothes to avoid crease. The invention of hanger has evolved through the years which made a great impact in today’s consumerist society. The timeline below will show the development of the hanger from its origin and up to today’s innovations.
Many historians believe that the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, invented a prototype of the coat hanger and some says it was O.A. North of Connecticut, USA. However, an article published by Virginia Mescher on 2006 argues that images of early hangers, from ancient Egypt and Greece are shown on the web site of the Museum of Coat hangers which indicates that cloth hangers are existent even before Thomas Jefferson applied for patent of his idea of a hanger.
Note: Not all entry that was patented on a specific date, means that the patented item was available on that date or that it was ever manufactured. The patent dates should be used only as a guideline for dating but should not be the only criteria used in dating a particular invention or item.
Timeline of Hanger
1809
Albert Trou made a wooden frame which was padded with cotton and covered with wool which are designed for hanging clothes.
1835
Wire and Wooden hangers were displayed Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë’s home in Haworth, England and were supposedly made by a local carpenter.
1840
Stanley Fry designed a padded wire/wood silk-covered.
1852
W. B. Olds was issued the first patent of hanger (#8,858) the “coat-form.” It “consists in a bow or shank on one side opposite to its vertex, or pivoted to a bracket which is secured in a wall, or to any stationary standard or pendants horizontally upon the pivot.”
1868
D. Leach and E. S. Wardwell was issued next hanger patent (#79,580). Their inventio was used as a coat and cloak-hanger and was formed of cast iron or wood. The hanger was portable but still was hung by a loop-type device rather than a hook over a rod.
1869
The first wire coat patent was issued to E. N. Snow (#97,562) was an improvement on Leach and Wardwell’s patent for “Coat and Cloak Hanger.”
1869
O.A. North of Connecticut, USA invented the coat hook made of wood that later inspired the invention of hanger that was mass later produced.
1903
Albert J. Parkhouse invented a hanger made of a simple piece of wire and shaped two ovals and are twisted together which but a similar twisted wire hanger had been previously patented on December 7, 1869 (#97,562) by E. N. Snow and in subsequent years, many other design ideas over the ensuing decades were patented
1932
Schuyler C. Hulett mounted cardboard tubes on the wire sections which supported the clothing in order to prevent excess wrinkling.
1965
Gerhard Wieckmann filed a patent for a revolutionary new hanger that still had a wire hook, however used a new design wooden frame.
1967
J.H Batts invented a molded plastic hanger which would not only lower production costs but would increase the hanger’s durability, the contoured design enabled it to hold heavier items such as suit jackets and pants with greater sturdiness - whilst enabling garments to maintain their natural shape.

2002
Steel Wire Garment Hangers or SWG hangers were mass produced in China, the model was made of steel wire, fabricated from carbon steel wire, be it galvanized or painted, available with coated with latex or epoxy or similar gripping materials, fashioned with paper covers or capes (with/without printing) and or nonslip features such as saddles or tubes. This material has several commercial designations, such as shirt, suit, caped, or latex (industrial) hangers.
