Which is Worse For Your Heart's health, Sugar or Salt?

What should we make of study claiming that excessive sugar is by far the worst of the two yet we've always been told that eating too much salt and sugar is bad for our heart health?

According to a study by US researchers, sugar really worsens the effects of salt in terms of rising blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart disease. The researchers assert that reducing salt levels may, in some cases, do more harm than good and that people should concentrate more on reducing their sugar consumption than their salt intake.

Their findings, however, have sparked a backlash among other scientists who believe that in order to improve heart health, both salt and sugar levels must be controlled.

Several studies, including this one published in JAMA Internal Medicine, show that eating too much sugar may increase your risk of dying from heart disease (even if you're not overweight). 2 Excess sugar caused inflammation of the arterial walls in this case. This chronic inflammation of the blood vessels is what can lead to heart disease and strokes.

Meanwhile, salt is necessary for keeping your body fluids balanced at the proper concentration, but too much can cause your body fluid volume to skyrocket. This raises your blood pressure, which can lead to more serious heart health issues like stroke or heart disease.

In accordance with current recommendations, men and women should each consume no more than 70g of sugar each day.
A average 250 ml glass of fruit juice contains up to seven teaspoons of sugar. Instead, sip on water or tomato juice that is high in lycopene.

Your cup of tea or coffee should no longer include any additional tablespoons of sugar. If you can't completely avoid them, pick a low-calorie sweetener.

Do you enjoy sweet things? Eat some fruit instead of your go-to chocolate treat. Fruits provide a little amount of sugar but are also a good source of fibre, vitamins, and minerals. They'll also aid in your daily five-a-day goal.
Regardless of whether sugar is in fact worse for heart health than salt, it is still true that eating too much of either can be harmful to our hearts. We may all take action to cut back on our consumption and guard against these negative impacts.
