Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is a substance that helps the stomach digest food and keeps the pH level of the stomach normal. Hydrochloric acid is also known as HCl, muriatic acid, or even spirits of salt; it's the same substance found in many household cleaning products and in most cases it's colorless and odorless. It doesn't sound like something that would be present in your body but without hydrochloric acid you couldn't digest food properly.

Hydrochloric acid (HCl) is widely found in the human stomach. The body secretes it into the stomach to help break down food. We often think of our stomachs as being highly acidic, but this isn't really true.

HCl is a highly concentrated solution of water and salt with a pH level of 0.8-1.5. If the pH level in the stomach is over 2.5, the stomach will begin to produce more hydrochloric acid in order to keep the stomach at a pH level that is closer to neutral.

Hydrochloric acid is found in the stomach and intestines, as well as in saliva, and is responsible for breaking down the protein found in our food, especially meat.

If you have food stuck in your stomach you will likely experience reflux symptoms (that's what we call acid indigestion) or heartburn. When you have a digestive issue it is often best to consult a doctor. However, there are some things you can do to help you get over the acid indigestion so you don't have to go see the doctor.

You don't want to overdo the medicine or get into any bad habits that will cause your stomach to become acidic again.

However, the main thing to remember when you have acid indigestion is to always monitor how often you are experiencing heartburn. Once you determine how often you are experiencing it, you may want to experiment with different diets and see what you think will help keep your stomach from being acidic.

Sometimes the easiest solution is not to eat at all. Remember, an empty stomach is the best stomach. Eating while you are feeling ill or have a sore throat can cause digestive issues, so if you need to eat during the day, do so slowly and try to avoid having a hot meal.

It is also helpful to try using a stool softener if you find that your stool is hard. Stool softeners contain magnesium and usually work by helping the stool pass more easily through the digestive system. Many people have an overactive bladder, and if you find yourself needing to go the bathroom more often than normal it could be the signs of a digestive problem. If you think you may be experiencing any digestive issues, make an appointment with your doctor.

If the doctor cannot diagnose your symptoms, they may refer you to a gastroenterologist. This specialist can use certain tests to determine whether your gut is doing well. In the meantime, monitor your symptoms and try to control the problem as best as you can.
