Recently, I had shared about those music bands and groups with successful debut albums which some of them had successful succeeding records too.
Several decades ago, it's not easy for a solo male artist to immediately achieve success. The atmosphere in music change, and there are some of these men who became icons in the industry.
While there are a number of artists who initially became famous as part of a band or a group, and their debut album had great success.
1. Justin Timberlake
We all know that Justin Timberlake achieved success as part of NSYNC. Perhaps some will expect his success because of being the most popular member of a boyband. However, being part of a famous boyband won't guarantee success. Nick Carter was a member of the most successful boyband Backstreet Boys, but his debut album didn't sell well, and never because famous as a solo artist.
Justin Timberlake released his debut album "Justified" and it debuted at number 2 in Billboard Hot 100. It initially had a swift drop but by the aid of his singles, the album became multiplatinum. It also became the standard for boyband members who will release their first solo album. Eventually, Justin Timberlake had succeeding success in his music career.
2. George Michael
British singer George Michael was first known being the one half of Wham!. The duo had success but only released two albums, and had hit singles. When George Michael had released his first solo album "Faith", he immediately achieved the success which is even bigger than with Wham!. "Faith" went to number 1 in many countries worldwide, and has sold around 20 million, and it became the biggest selling album the year it was released. He eventually became one of the biggest selling artists of all time with subsequent huge selling records. His album "Older" may have had limited success in the US, but it was very huge in Europe. In fact, each of his albums including major compilation albums has sold multimillion.
3. Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars has been a songwriter before getting recognized as a solo artist. He was featured in top 10 hits such as "Nothin' On You" by B.O.B. and "Billionaire" by Travie McCoy, and he served as a co-songwriter of those hits. Not too long after those hits, he released his first solo single "Just the Way You Are" which became a global number 1 hit. His debut album "Doo-wops and Hooligans" had debuted high at number 3, but it went down swiftly. But due to his succeeding singles, it became a multiplatinum seller in the US. Bruno Mars succeeding albums, "Unorthodox Jukebox" and "24K Magic" became big sellers too, and produced hit singles too.
4. Phil Collins
Phil Collins also first achieved success from the band Genesis, also one of the hit bands from 1970s until early 1990s. When he went solo with his first album "Face Value", it became a big seller even reaching 5x platinum in America. Not only that, he achieved more success with his subsequent albums particularly with "No Jacket Required" and "... But Seriously", as well as hit singles by which one of them is "Against All Odds". His other albums has sold well too, and his compilation album in 1998 has sold more than 10 million.
5. Justin Bieber
Yes, Justin Bieber may have released an EP (extended play) first before a studio album. But the gap is just few months, and "My World EP" is also a success. His debut album "My World 2.0" became a hit which included the original most viewed music video "Baby". In fact at that time, there's "Bieber Fever" despite the fact that he was also disliked. It's evident that "Baby" was the most disliked music video on YouTube too. Now, Justin Bieber is a respected artist, with matured kind of music. He's also one of the most successful male artists of all time. Under his discography, he is one of the most picked artists to collaborate with.
I like Phil Collins' music.
