I just joined the I am SAD bandwagon in time of my birthday. I had no intention to join but I was legitimately sad because of the frying food in oil issue. I was very angry at my husband that I asked him that he should give me an air fryer as a gift. I also posted on Facebook, as a joke, that maybe friends can send me as a gift.

Well, I have to acknowledge my feelings that I was upset. My father in law heard our petty argument. After few hours, I went to see him, apologized and hugged him while I was crying. “I am so sorry papi, I just wanted to cook for my birthday!” He calmed me down and hugged me back while he asked his grandchildren to kiss their mama.

I continued to prepare the Filipino lumpia and cooked everything. My husband arrived with a bouquet of roses and apologized to me. I was a little bit grumpy but I still gave him a kiss. He bought sushi and gyoza for me.

I have a fever and a runny nose so I am not really okay. I need more sleep. I am very confident with my food preparation that I let my FIL taste the first few lumpia. He loves it. My husband ate as well.

What I realized in this situation that in the Philippines, we are happy to eat fry foods from fried rice to fried egg to fried chicken to fried fish. We all know that it is the quickest way to cook our food. Life in the Philippines is just simple. Nothing complicated in terms of preparing our own food.

To buy an air fryer is expensive. It is a luxury item in the kitchen and I will never request that if I live in the Philippines. But I am thinking to buy an air fryer only if I will have enough funds from Read Cash. Haha!

A Filipino friend who studied French cuisine when he was in college, confirmed to me that French people are never a fan of frying their food in oil except the French fries. For the meat and fish, they sometimes do the pan frying with butter or slow cooked in the oven.

In a simple Filipino household, we don’t have an oven, we don’t buy butter and sometimes we don’t have our own fridge. Yes, sometimes we asked a neighbor aunt to keep some of the food that needs to be inside their fridge.

I have to be honest that my family in the Philippines is not very rich as we don’t have these kind of luxury in the kitchen.

That is why I was very emotional and kind of sentimental for a Filipino lumpia because it reminds me of my life in the Philippines and the bond with my mother.

It is so sad that once in a while why I cannot enjoy a simple fry dish. Why it needs to be complicated? Why am I wanting an expensive air fryer just to enjoy fry meals without oil?

For health reasons, eating fried dish with oil is very bad for our health. That’s why in the French cuisine, they need to avoid it. And having air fryer makes you eat fried dishes without guilt.

My husband and I are ok after and we continued to celebrate as a family with the FIL. It’s just that I never took pictures on my birthday.
