The number of people in the world who ate half of their food and went to bed hungry at night was 135 million last year. The number could almost double by the end of this year due to Covid-19.
A report titled 'Global Report on Food Crisis-2020' shows the record of people in acute food crisis or worse. These people live in 55 countries around the world. Bangladesh is also among the countries.
A total of 18 organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Food Program (WFP), released a report on April 20 on the state of acute hunger in the world. The reporting work was completed before the Covid-19 disaster.
The number of hungry people in the world has remained stable for a decade and has started to increase again since 2015. In 2015, the number of hungry people in the world was 8 crore 54 lakhs, in 2016 this number increased to 69 crore 75 lakhs and in 2016 this number was 61 crore 16 lakhs.
According to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), the number of hungry people could double to 265 million this year due to the economic downturn caused by the coronavirus. The WFP said in a new report on Tuesday.
