Gain acquaintance
The island first came to the notice of tourists in the 1970's. In 1970, American director Jack Stuart shot the film Nam's Angels in Boracay. Much of Robert Aldrich's film Too Late the Hero was also made here. In 1978, the German author Jens Peter described the beauty of the island to the world in his book "Paradise on Earth". From the eighties onwards, tourists began flocking to the island. Under the management of the Philippine Tourism Authority, everything on the island is modernized, including a potable water supply system, waste disposal system. Following these steps in the development of the tourism industry, the number of tourists on the island exploded.
Impact of uncontrolled tourism
At first, the eruption brought benefits to the country's economy, but as time went on, the island began to suffer the consequences of uncontrolled tourist arrivals. The island was the destination of one-third of all tourists visiting the Philippines in 2017. This number was more than 2 million last year! Naturally, the small island of 3.98 square miles could not bear this weight and began to throb. In April of this year, the President of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, called the island a cesspool. He made the remarks after a video went viral showing the waste material flowing directly into the blue waters of Boracay.
An emergency task force was sent to rescue the island. Samples of more than eight hundred environmental violations were found. According to statistics, the island's waste is three times higher than the country's capital, Manila. So the government imposed a six-month ban on tourist arrivals to restore the island to its former glory. On April 4 this year, Rodrigo Duterte's spokesman Harry Rock announced that the island would be closed for six months from April 26.
The steps taken by the authorities
During these 6 months, in addition to the clean-up activities, various other decisions were taken to protect the island. More than two hundred illegal installations have been evicted. Cigarettes and alcohol are banned in public on the entire island, including beaches. All types of disposable plastic items, including polythene bags, have been banned. Deckchairs, beach food and beverage outlets, and massages are also banned. One of the island's attractions is that fire dancers are instructed to use LED lights instead of kerosene-soaked torches.
Limits on the movement of motorized vehicles have also been specified. It has also been decided to revoke the license if any resort, restaurant or hotel violates any of the rules more than three times. The island will be reopened in 3 steps. In the first phase, a very small number of entrances were opened on October 26. The next step will be to open it in April 2019, subject to reserved access. The island will be fully opened in December 2019. Rules have also been laid down for the entry of as many tourists as possible into the island. Even after being fully opened, about 6,400 tourists will be allowed to enter every day.
Authorities have taken all possible steps to save this impeccably beautiful paradise from destruction. The situation has also improved considerably since the opening of the island.
The rest of the responsibility falls on the tourists. It will not take long for this paradise to become a hell again even after taking so many measures if the awareness of tourists is not increased. Tourists around the world have no choice but to play their part in raising awareness and protecting the environment to preserve places of natural beauty, including Boracay.
