According to LinkedIn 2020 emerging jobs report, Cybersecurity specialist is listed as part of the top 10 job functions to be on the lookout for not just for employers but for prospective employees. Learning security isn't just good for the compensations that come along with it. It is also useful in forming your own ideology in protecting yourself, and the people around you from being compromised.
Just like every other career, cybersecurity is definitely not a walk in the park, but there is assured success in this field as long as the individual consciously and continuously learns and adapts to new concepts day by day. So how do we get started?
The first way is to start by assessing yourself. These questions will greatly help you.
Am I an IT person?
How long have I done IT?
What exactly have I done in IT that can help my cybersecurity path?
How much time can I spend per week in pursuing this as a career?
For the average person, I can answer this question for you and guide you to what you need to do next. These are the answers to these asked questions
Yes, as long as I can operate a computer, I am as good as I need to be.
This answer is individual dependent
From programming to networking to database and system administration to graphics etc, you can ring any idea you already have to this path. It will help you greatly.
Per week, I would advise 7hours meaning 1 hour a day. But the most important thing you need is interest.
Offensive Security and where to get started.
To get started, I would recommend this course by eLearnSecurity called PTS (Penetration Testing Security). It's a fairly new course in the market but has really great concepts and at a steal price. Students have access to labs and materials and can study at their own pace. From most courses, I have done I highly recommend this one for every beginner as it captures all basic concepts that need to be known. After completing the course, the student has the opportunity of taking its exam and getting certified the certificate is called eJPT (eLearn Junior Pentester). Once you have passed the eJPT, you should be more comfortable to move to hacking virtual machines and improving on the already known concepts. Grab a copy of Kali Linux installation and move over to Vulnhub, get as many boxes rooted as possible using walkthroughs if you ever get stuck. Then, move over to HTB (Hack the box) and root as many Virtual machines as possible. Then get yourself ready for the OSCP with the PWK (Pentesting with Kali) course owned by Offensive Security. From this point onwards you wouldn't need any hand-holding. You can come back to this article a year later to thank me.
So then, get started and share your progress. There's no time to waste.
