On 16 September 1963, the first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra AL-Haj declared the formation of Malaysia in the presence of 30,000 rakyat at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. Together with the rakyat who were there to celebrate this historic event, Tunku Abdul Rahman proclaimed "Merdeka" seven times. Malaysia Day is now celebrated on 16 September every year to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation which comprises 11 states in Malaya and two states in Borneo, namely Sabah and Sarawak. The formation of Malaysia was the result of a formal agreement from these states to form a new country which was seen as a united federation with its own characteristics. The history of Malaysia which was the result of the challenges and struggles of our ancestors should be remembered as it laid the foundation of our nation today. By understanding the history, the rakyat would be able to appreciate the true value of independence that we have achieved. The celebration of Malaysia Days strengthens the unity among all races and 16 September 2013 is an important date as it as marks the 50th Anniversary of the Formation of Malaysia.
