History
On April 13, 2009, YB Dato 'Dr. Maximus Ongkili, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation launched the Commemorative Coins in conjunction with the International Astronomy Year 2009 (IYA2009) at National Planetarium, Kuala Lumpur. The commemorative coins are legally treated and issued in 3 types; RM100 Gold, RM10 Silver, and Nordic Gold RM1.
The front of the Coin displays the Langkawi National Observatory with its main telescope located beside it. The background of this coin displays a group of stars known as the Orion Belt and the Saturn planet. The word "International Year of Astronomy 2009" is displayed on the top of the coin as marking the celebration of global astronomy.
The back of the Coin displays the official logo of IYA2009 and its main theme "The Universe, Yours To Discover". The word Bank Negara Malaysia is displayed at the top of the coin, while the face value of the coin, at the bottom.
The commemorative coins are mint and packed by Bank Negara Malaysia and were sold on April 14, 2009, at Bank Negara Malaysia (BNMLINK) headquarters, and its branches are in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching.
