On February 8, 2009, Bank Negara Malaysia's 50th-anniversary commemorative coin was launched by YAB Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. Three types of commemorative coins were issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) to record 50 years of BNM's contribution to the development of financial institutions and to promote monetary and financial stability.

The front of the coin features the Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya skyline Silhouettes, reflecting the country's economic development and advancement since its independence. The Bank Negara Malaysia logo is located in the center of the interior of the lawn-shaped line, a popular local spice. This door flower symbolizes the importance of spice trade that has generated economic growth and prosperity in the region during the reign of the Malay Sultanate and it was depicted on the Sun Dinar coins used during the period. The words"Ulang Tahun Ke-50 Bank Negara Malaysia" mean "Bank Negara Malaysia's 50th Anniversary" in English and "1959 - 2009" are shown on the side of the coin.

Behind the Coin reflects the words "Bank Negara Malaysia" in Jawi writing written on the upper side of the coin. The 14 point star symbolizes 14 states in Malaysia including the Federal Territory and is depicted in the center of the interior of the flower-shaped line. The face value of the coin is shown on the lower side, while the pending is the traditional Malay ornamentation pattern on the left and right sides of the coin.

The commemorative coins are minted and packed by Bank Negara Malaysia and were sold on 10 February 2009 at Bank Negara Malaysia (BNMLINK) headquarters and at its branches in Penang, Johor Bahru, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu, and Kuching.
