On 30 August 2001, in conjunction with the 21st Southeast Asian Games or XXI SEA Games held in Kuala Lumpur from September 8 to September 17, 2001. Bank Negara Malaysia issued the 21st SEA Games Commemorative Coin issued in three types; RM1 Copper Nickel, RM10 silver proof, and RM100 gold proof. All these coins are legal tender and all the coins are minted by The Royal Mint of Malaysia.
On the back of the coin display Si-Tumas, the official mascot of the SEA XXI Games as a major design surrounded by the word "SEA XXI SEA GAMES" and the value of the coin. The Si-Tumas design varies according to the denomination:
i. Gold Coin displays Si Tumas to have a gold medal.
ii. Silver coins display Si Tumas in swimming pools.
iii. Copper-Nickel coins display Si Tumas in gymnastics.
On the front display the same design, the official logo of the SEA XXI Games as the main design. Surrounded by the word "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" and the date of the tournament "8-17 SEPTEMBER 2001."
All these coins have been mint by The Royal Mint of Malaysia.
