The gold commemorative coin of 2000 (Malaysia Commemorative Millennium Gold Coin) was launched on 23 December 1999 by Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad. The coin made in conjunction with the commencement of the new millennium has a face value of RM500 and is made of pure gold 999.9 with the quality of proof.

When it was launched in 1999, it was sold at RM2,000 each and its total volume was 10,000 pieces. However, many old numismatic dealer/collector tell that the actual amount of real coins are very little compared to the amount of mintage allowed by Bank Negara Malaysia.

At the front of the coin, is decorated with sirih junjung motif, traditional Malay fittings to welcome guests. The two keris blades symbolize the readiness of the country to face the challenges of the new millennium and globes and neutrons reflecting the country is driving towards a new era based on information technology in a more global environment. It is also adorned with the word " TO THE GLORY 21ST CENTURY" in the roman and Jawi texts.

At the back of it displays the coat of arm of Malaysia with a denominational value of "500 RINGGIT MALAYSIA" with the words "SYILING PERINGATAN TAHUN 2000". The gold coin is loaded in a pewter container decorated with a rugged cloud pattern and a replica of a Kijang(deer) gold coin on its cover.
