On 18 October 1989, Bank Negara Malaysia issued a commemorative coin in conjunction with the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Langkawi, Kedah from 18 to 24 October 1989. Two types of commemorative coins were issued 25 ringgit silver coins and 5 ringgit Copper Plated Zinc coins reminders. Both coins are legal tender in Malaysia.
For the design of the silver coin front, the centerpiece is decorated with a world map and Malaysian flag fluttering on the map of Malaysia. It is surrounded by the official logo of CHOGM, the "1989" year, and the words "MESYUARAT KETUA-KETUA KERAJAAN KOMANWEL" on the coin and the word "THE COMMONWEALTH HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING" under the coin. For the design of zinc-coated copper coins, the middle part was replaced by the Sultan Abdul Samad building on the back of several straight lines across the bottom. Other features are the same.
The backside design for both types of coins is the same as the middle one has the word "MALAYSIA" on a straight line across the coin. Above the Malaysia word, the coat of arm of Malaysia while under the Malaysia word is placed the face value of the commemorative coins.
The commemorative coins are minted by Kilang Wang Bank Negara Malaysia
