The 15th SEA Games commemorative coins were issued by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) in conjunction with the 1989 Southeast Asian Games (SEA) or the 15th Southeast Asian Games. The SEA Games were held in Kuala Lumpur on 20 August to 31 August 1989. The coins were officially launched on 16 August 1989 with 3 denominations of coins; RM5 Copper Plated Zinc, RM15 silver, and RM250 gold. These coins are legal tender in Malaysia.
The front of the coin displays sports events contested in the 15th SEA Games; RM5-takraw, Football & Hockey; RM15-Athletic, Badminton & Swimming; RM250-athletic participants won the race and a picture of a flying pigeon on it as well as the 15th Sea Sports logo. On top of the picture, the athlete listed the year of the coin production "1989". It reads " SUKAN ASIA TENGGARA KE XV" mean " 15th Southeast Asian Games (SEA)" in Malay and also "XV SOUTHEAST ASIA GAMES".
The back of the coin displays the denominational value of the coin with the symbol of Malaysia and also the article "KUALA LUMPUR-MALAYSIA".
