On 1 July 1986, Bank Negara Malaysia launched the United Nations Decade for Women Memorial Symposium in conjunction with the United Nations program to enhance the status of women in developing countries through the United Nations Decade Coinage Program of the United Nations. It is also in conjunction with 1 decade of International Women's Day celebrated on March 8 each year beginning in 1975.
Malaysia has issued two types of legal tender coins made of gold and sterling silver minted by Valcambi Mint, Switzerland.
The design of the front of the coin contains the word "DEKAD WANITA BANGSA-BANGSA BERSATU * MALAYSIA " around the coin. In the middle, the image of a pigeon represents the freedom of women and the year 1976-85.
The back design is adorned with the word "BANK NEGARA MALAYSIA" placed on the side of the coin, the face value is placed at the bottom of the coin while the Malaysian map and the Bank Negara Malaysia logo are forged in the center of the coin.
A total of 24 countries participated in the program; Barbados, Belize, Bhutan, Bulgaria, China, Ethiopia, Greece, Hungary, Jamaica, Lesotho, Lebanese, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mongolia, Papua New Guinea, Seychelles, Solomon Islands, Sudan, Tanzania, Turkey, Turks & Cicos, Yamen and the United States of America. Almost all countries produce coins .925 Fine Silver except Hungary .640 Fine Silver and the United States Proof Copper-Nickel.
