On March 16, 1981, Bank Negara Malaysia issued 3 legal tender commemorative coins in conjunction with the launching of the 4th Malaysia Plan by Tun Hussein Onn. These coins are minted using gold, silver and cupro-nickel metals in which each type is issued in the form of proof and non-proof
The front of the coin shows the third Malaysian Prime Minister's portrait, Tun Hussein Onn. At the bottom of the image is the word "TUN HUSSEIN ONN".
The back of the coin displays the Coat of Arms of the country in the center surrounded by the word "1981 * RANCANG MALAYSIA KEEMPAT * 1985" as well as the face value of the coin. For gold coins, the word "900/1000 FINE GOLD" is written under the Coat of Arms. The word "RANCANG MALAYSIA KEEMPAT" means the 4th Malaysia Plan.
