An Australian team of scientists has claimed that bee venom extract is capable of destroying harmful breast cancer cells.
In the meantime, they have succeeded in laboratory tests. However, the scientists think that there is a need for more tests.
The ingredient in that toxic extract of bees is called 'melitin'. This melatonin is able to fight against two types of cancer. One of which is breast cancer. So far its treatment is quite complicated.
The two types of cancer that melatonin works against, doctors call it ‘triple-negative’ and ‘HERTU-enriched’.
Women worldwide are the most affected by breast cancer. Over the ages, laboratory tests have shown that many types of chemicals are able to fight cancer cells. But after application in human body different results have been noticed.
Studies on bee venom have shown in the past that these venom's contain anti-cancer ingredients. Which is effective in melanoma type cancers.
The study was conducted at the Harry Parkinson's Institute in Western Australia. The research report is published in the journal Nature Precision Oncology.
What has the study found?
After conducting the experiment on more than 300 male and female bees, the head of the research team, Kiara Duffy, said, "We have found the toxic extract of female bees to be very strong." It was found that they destroyed the cancer cells within an hour. No such side effects were noticed.
The researchers also found that the toxic substance, melatonin, inhibited the growth of cancer cells.
Until now the treatment for ‘triple-negative’ breast cancer has been surgery or radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
Will this discovery be useful in the future?
Peter Clinken, a leading scientist in Western Australia, called it a breakthrough.
He said that the study shows that the human body has to use any element of nature for any treatment.
However, researchers warn that this discovery in the treatment of cancer should be considered as an early stage. Much more research needs to be done to find drugs to treat cancer.
