Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 35:6-11

source

It seems that Jacob has no problem remembering where he had met God in the past. They arrived to Bethel (Beyt-El) and everyone build an alter there. They also needed to bury Deborah there under an oak tree. The name they called it was Allon-bacuth, which means "Oak of weeping."

Isn't this the place where he had fallen asleep and seen the ladder? God remembers too because he decided to visit him again in this same place. If I remember right, Jacob was already renamed Israel after struggling with a man right before he met Esau. So God wants to tell him again about the name change. He also tells him to 'be fruitful and multiply', the same thing he told mankind many times, and that kings will be among his grandchildren.

We never really know what are children will amount to as we raise them and teach them. It would be nice to get some future insight about what they will become. We leave this at mid-sentence as God speaks. We will pick up next week with the thirty fifth chapter of Genesis. In my personal reading, I am in the book of Esther now.

Today's reading

English

And Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him, and there he built an altar and called the place El-bethel,' because there God had revealed himself to him when he fled from his brother. And Deborah, Rebekah's nurse, died, and she was buried under an oak below Bethel. So he called its name Allon-bacuth.

God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him. And God said to him, "Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name." So he called his name Israel. And God said to him, "I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply. A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, and kings shall come from your own body.
