My student days.

In this city many disastrous events happened. Let me tell you that the city of Mérida is a charming city, it’s a city of students and I will tell you why.

The state of Mérida is located in the center of the Venezuelan Andean mountain range, 1600mt above sea level. Then there is the city of Merida which is located in a lower place, inside a depression.

The city has a temperature that goes from 18 ° to 24 °, of course if you go up to the peaks by cable car you can see the snow fall on you or if you go up the road to the communication routes with other towns you can meet very low temperatures because you see the ice at the foot of the mountain. I loved seeing that very early in the morning.

Like I was saying, the city of Mérida is a student city, because it has many faculties of different specialties located in different places or poles of the city. The economy of this city is based on tourism and students. It’s very noisy in class periods and very lonely when the students are on vacation.

The city is crossed by the Albarregas, a river that flows from the Chama river. The city is divided in two by this majestic river. In order unite the two sides of the city there are several viaducts or bridges that are the roads of land which let people cross between the two sides of the city.

Those are high viaducts. Once you reach the highest point and stop to see the sights when you walk through it, you can see the vegetation, rocks and flow of the river.

During the years that I remained studying there, I sadly received, on several occasions, news of people who made the decision to end their lives by jumping off the viaduct. This is common, and there are many stories of such things happening.

But for all those people that jumped from the top of the viaduct there were others who did not calculate well, and jumped from lower places. Those who do it from the top of the viaduct had no other destination than the graveyard, but there were unsuccessful cases.

There was a case of a mother who threw her two children and then threw herself. All died. It was terrible; she must have been living a hard life that led her to taking this decision.

I remember a case of a young man who miscalculated and fell on the vegetation, very tall leafy plants that managed to minimize the impact of the fall and the young man only suffered several bodily injuries.

I also heard of a young man who fell into the river flow that washed him but did not kill him. It was so bad that it caused a double spine fracture, cervical and dorsal, leaving the poor man totally paralyzed and in a wheelchair.

These weren’t the only ones, so many more cases reached my ears, and I could hear all of them while I spent my 8 years of stay at the University of The Prestigious Medical School in the city of Mérida, the city of knights.

It saddens me whenever I hear of suicide cases. Worst is when they kill their children before killing themselves. Innocent children who have a life ahead of them, shorten and decided upon by the closest. In cases when they jump and not die, they suffer worse.

Yes, they are very sad cases that occur very frequently in that beautiful city. That viaduct is the most used form of suicide. Being alive is sadder for them and a bigger burden for the family they fled from.
