It was a beautiful house where they lived, its outer walls covered with evergreen ivy. With tall windows, except for those in the attic that were small squares all around the house. The house is a bit distant from the others because they chose it that way. They live in a small town but with very happy people and very well established families who invite everyone who visits to stay.
Inside the house is Junior's family of four; his parents Joan and John and their two children, his sister Susan, with 17 years, and himself, with 10 years of age. It’s an ordinary family and everyone gets along well.
Joan and John met when they were young in another town and decided over the years to come and live here and be together forever and start their family. They work online, so they don't have to leave the house much except in situations of taking projects to other places outside of town.
Susan and Junior are still in school. They are young, have fun and share their experiences of the day when evening falls and they are able to get back together. They enjoy living as a family and always try to be together, that's why the parents decided to work online and the kids stayed at the same school.
Near their place there’s a nice river where the kids usually go fishing in the afternoons to discern about their day away from home. They considered that they lead a quiet family life which makes them very happy, although their parents spend most of their day between their jobs and housework, which is mostly done by Joan, it seems that everything is done in a good way.
There is only one day when they get sad and that is when they remember that a few years ago they all went on a trip together. They would take advantage of the fact that their parents needed to go to the neighboring town to bring certain documents to do business with other people, but when on the way back at night, they didn’t realize in time that in the middle of the curve of the road there was a deer. The animal did not run with the light of the car, so John made a harsh turn to try and avoid it, but when he did so the car went off the road, overturned and before they realized they were all under the car.
Little by little everyone got out of the car. Junior was the least injured, so he had to help the others get out of there.
They were close to town and decided to walk back, they still had the strength to do it, it was night and no car came to pick them up, they all walked until a car passed by and they got in the back, it was a big van and Junior helped them all to get in.
They checked their own bodies and realized that they had no major injuries so they decided to go home and enjoy the chance at life they had.
The next day they took the other car they had at home and went to see the car from the accident but it was gone, they were surprised! They didn’t know why someone would take a car from an accident.
That's why every year when they remembered the day of the accident they all talked about how lucky they were to be together.
But today was different, besides remembering that event as a lucky case for everyone, they were putting the house on the market. They would move to another place because business was not as good as before and they had to look for a smaller house closer to the people of the town.
A family of three, the Henderson, came to see the house. Junior takes care of them because his parents are still working, he shows them the house and explains the conditions and the cost. The Hendersons are very happy with the house and decide to buy it.
Now they just need to talk to the adults and make the deal, so Junior talks to his parents and tells them that the Henderson family is downstairs and that they want to buy the house. Joan and John get excited and go downstairs to talk to them.
Junior arrives in the living room where he left the interested family seated and introduces them to his parents. They were very excited, and quickly Joan and John go to shake hands with the adults… But they only see that they look at their faces with a surprised expression and don’t extend their hands.
The Henderson family turns to Junior and says: "What kind of joke is this?" to which Junior replies "Joke? What joke?" "Yes, a joke. Because there's only you here, there's no one else".
Junior looks at them intrigued and looks at his parents, Joan and John looking at each other's faces and speak to the Hendersons "Here we are, we give you our hands and you don’t respond to our hospitality? And then you say that we aren’t present? What is wrong with you?"
Junior doesn’t come out of his astonishment and looks and asks the Hendersons again… “Seriously, don't you see that my parents are here and that they are trying to shake hands with you?” The Hendersons just take their little son's hand and tell Junior that they’re leaving, they get quickly to the door, almost running, and leave.
At that very moment Susan arrives and asks... "What's going on here? Those people ran over me and didn't even stop to apologize!".
Meanwhile, Junior doesn't get over his astonishment and tells his sister what happened and then he says to his sister:" The only one they saw was me… why Susan, why don't they see you but they see me?
It’s then that Junior's mother takes him by the hand, understanding what’s happening and explains to him... "You know dearie… I already suspected that something was happening to us. For some time now, or rather, since the day of our accident people moved away from us and only responded to your greetings and no one answered ours. That’s why we chose you to do the shopping... your father and I realized that something was going on but we didn’t give it any importance but today… today we confirmed what we feared”
His mother continues to explain “We died in that accident and we only stayed with you in spirit. You helped us out of the car and since then everything changed and you took care of the family… It seemed like you became an adult since the day of the accident. We didn't really see it way, but today we realized that... I’m sorry honey, but we are dead.”
