Juan, that was his name, and although he was not murdered, he put his life at risk many times. He was about 68 years old and he had a liquor store in town. Not because he needed money but because he was fond of drinks and the girls who worked in those places.
So he had the best deal of his life, that's what he thought; he drank and sold liquor while enjoying his girls. That’s not a smart thing to do... if you work selling alcohol you shouldn’t ingest it since it clouds your mind and makes you take questionable decisions. But I don't think he ever learned that, not the first time he put his life at risk, or the second, nor the other countless times he suffered attacks.
One quiet night at 3am, someone knocks on his door and Juan looks out a window in the door, this isn’t the time to go out and sell liquor, by looking through his window he doesn’t open the door to attend to the drunks who come to buy at those hours, but he’s getting used to selling at that time. The person at the door doesn't seem strange to him and he opens his window, his client asks him for a bottle of rum but as soon as he turns his back on him his client points a gun at his head.
It’s at this moment that he realizes there isn’t just one person at the door. They manage to pass and give him several blows to the head with the butt of their pistol. The impact manages to make him fall to the ground and another person of the group looks for anything he can steal. Juan is dizzy from the blows but tries to get up, another mistake that he will later realize he made, because at the same moment that he tried to get up from the floor he was hit again on the back of his head until he fell again.
A large wound was opened on the scalp. He, lying on the floor, already understood that he should not try to stand up, so he pretended to be dead or passed out. The important thing is to not get up from the floor. He felt the blood pouring out of his head, to the point that the whole room became a well of blood according to the people who saw the place, when they helped him.
The thieves spent all their time searching everywhere. They took money, clothes, liquor and food. When Juan saw that they left, and when they closed the door behind them, he got up as best he could and started screaming for help. When someone found him, he searched for a car and he was taken to the nearest health care center.
They took an X-ray of his skull and there was only one large scalp wound that needed more than a hundred stitches, the only thing he had left was a bunch of stitches and the memories of a criminal act that didn’t teach him anything.
He returned to his business after having sworn to his children he would not drink more while he was selling and that he would not attend to anyone during the night, of course, he did not comply. After this accident, others came, until he was eventually forced to sell that business and leave town.
Now he went to another house that he had far from there, the house where he lived with his wife and children. His wife had been dead for many years and his children now all lived in distant places with their respective families, so he no longer sold liquor but his attachment to the good looking girls turned his house into a place where he could date all of them.
…However, with time he began to lose all the things of the family and the little money that he had left after selling his liquor store in town, the girls he brought stole all of the money he could have and only stopped visiting him when every penny ran out.
To him it was the best way to live and enjoy his life while he could, because when he was 75 years old, he no longer had money, no girls and no friends.
