Calla lily symbol of purity

At the beginning of April 2011, I had the opportunity to visit Colonia Tovar for the second time. We had more or less a week away from home, it was like a small vacation, although the real reason was that my husband had to go to the city of Barquisimeto to present his doctoral thesis. On our way back, we decided to stop by Colonia Tovar, before returning to our home in the city of Barcelona, AnzoƔtegui state.

I had already visited Colonia Tovar once, but I didn't really remember much, since I was very young when it happened. So it was practically my first time as well, just like my husband and my little girl, who was not yet 2 years old.

We stayed at the beautiful Selva Negra Hotel, an almost paradisiacal place, with dreamlike gardens. Nature seemed to be at its best, everywhere I looked there were magnificent flowers, trees so green, it was just a wonderful feeling. I took lots of pictures and these in particular were taken in the gardens outside the building, where the reception and the restaurant are located.

I was struck by its simple and slender beauty, and its delicate white color stood out beautifully against the intense green. When I investigated, it turned out that this beautiful flower belongs to the Araceae family, and is known by several names, among them: Cala, Alcatraz, Ethiopian Calla, Ethiopian Hoop, Water Lily, Duck Flower or Pitcher Flower.

On the other hand, its scientific name is Zantedeschia aethiopica, and it is a perennial herbaceous plant, of South African origin. Its stem is fleshy and can reach more than one meter in height. Usually, from each plant bloom between 2 and 3 trumpet-shaped flowers that can measure between 5 or 6 centimeters long.

This striking, funnel-shaped flower does not go unnoticed by anyone, in addition, they give off a very attractive perfume, but both humans and animals should be careful, because both the flower and the rest of the plant are toxic. Symbolically speaking, calla lilies represent beauty. They are also considered a symbol of purity and compassion. In some places, they are even attributed with the property of bringing good luck.

Finally, as for their care, it is a very strong plant, however for them to develop in ideal conditions, they should be in the shade or semi-shade. The soil should be very humid, but it is necessary that it has a good drainage, in addition, it should always be nourished with organic fertilizer during the spring.
