War with Ukraine has started. Bitcoin fixes that.
First and most my most sincere condolences to the people of Ukraine regardless of which side of the war you may be or your ideology about it, and even for your own opinion because war means an innocent bystander will die, because a citivial will be put in danger and many others livelihoods will be affected directly or indirectly, and because the nature of war is always misery. My most sincere apologies to the people of Ukraine, and I hope and pray that this issue gets resolved peacefully and that this gets resolved as soon as possible to save lives.
The loss of property is familiar in war. Many people will lose what little they may have thanks to the destruction that weapons bring to a territory, not to mention that as the war drags on, other nations may be forced to interfere, creating an even bigger mess. The reasons why all started at a time point are useless now; what matters are the reasons why to stop before it gets out of hand. That being said, Bitcoin could fix this.
Governments need funds to run wars because soldiers don't work for free. Not only that soldiers wage war, but they also need to consume resources, bullets, weapons; they all use the material to be built, tanks, airplanes, vehicles of war, they all need gas. This gas must consume and be brought to the line; that means that war consumes resources. Those resources must be bought somehow, and most often than not, governments will pay for those resources using fiat currencies.
If you can make it so that citizens have a currency that the governments can't print, the government will be forced to borrow it from the citizen. If the citizen disagrees with the war, the government will be forced to consider other ways to fix the issue instead of just resorting to fighting as the first option. At least, this is the theory with what I am working on to make sense of this article. If citizens see no reason to go to war, they will lend money to the government, especially if they are the first aggressor. Now, if the country is being invaded, changes are that peer-to-peer currency could not stop that because citizens will approve of the government defending itself from others.
In the case of the current situation, the Ukrainian people could support their government by providing support to stop the war, while in Russia, people could starve their government from starting the war in the first place.
But as it is right now, governments worldwide don't need to ask for permission to start wars because they have all the fiat money they can print. Citizens don't have a way to protest such measures because the currency they are using is the same the government uses to pay for the war, and citizens have no actual power to overcome it. I believe this is how Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer currency could fix or at least try to fix the wars' incentives.
And financial possibilities also give citizens the tools to resist government tyranny. Still, you need to use it as a peer-to-peer currency from person to person to avoid government third parties' overreach of your economy.
Once again, I hope the war stops soon before more souls get lost in the hit of the battle and innocent lives get taken away forever.
I heard from AMTV that some people are already donating some Bitcoin to Ukraine to help it protect itself; I also know that the wallet developer called Simple Bitcoin Wallet SBW is from Ukraine. People are removing funds from his custodian LN channels, also known as hosted channels.
And the most significant risk of all of this is that if things don't deescalate, we could be seeing the start of WW3 and the threat of nuclear armageddon.
You are an optimist. I wish I could believe what you wrote, but unfortunately I don't. Yes my country accepts financial aid for the war against Russia in different currencies, both fiat and crypto. But this does not solve all the problems.
