Hello,

Today, I would like to write my thoughts about a social problem called "mental retardation" by some circles or "mental disability" by others.

The phrase "mental disability" will be the sentence I would prefer because it is more polite and reveals what is meant more clearly.

We can think of the concept called mind as the name given to the ability to learn new information, to benefit from the learned information, to practice applying them in life and to produce solutions in the face of the problems encountered in life.

Intelligence, on the other hand, is scaled with both mental abilities and practical ability, unlike the mind. It can be compared with the harmony that a person will show in his social, academic and private life. As in the past, learning ability alone is not enough to determine IQ. Learning, perception, transfer to the other side can be measured by the harmony it will show in the environment of friends, family and society.

Since "mental disability" is an area open to abuse, the relationship of the person, especially with adult individuals, includes a constant observation requirement. People with this disability are not determined to say "no", they are easily trustworthy and open to being deceived.

The diagnosis of "intellectual disability" is made before the age of 18, and it is made by taking into account the limitations in processes such as the concept, perception, learning, reflecting what is perceived, compatibility, which the person displays in family, school and social environments. He is subject to a special education.

The reasons for its formation are genetic diseases, lack of oxygen during birth, some febrile diseases that may occur after birth, consanguineous marriages.

The classification is;

  • Trainable intellectual disability

  • Teachable intellectual disability

  • Severe and very severe mental disability

… in the form of. Thanks to their special training, they can take care of themselves and reach a situation that can meet their daily needs. They can also work in protected workplaces. They can do many simple tasks assigned to them, go shopping, and keep money accounts. As long as this special situation of theirs is not abused, they can live like a healthy person and make decisions about themselves.

In severe and very severe mental disability, they can do self-care and nutrition by training, but most of them remain in need of care throughout their lives.

During the writing of the article, the opinions of some experts were taken and my cat thoughts were added. My friend, who was diagnosed with 2 non-severe "mental disabilities", has a brother and both are active individuals in the business field. As long as you don't raise your voice and ask surprising questions over and over, they can answer all your questions in a healthy way, and when they don't know, they can give a modest answer as "I don't know the answer to this". They are both sympathetic and very handsome, and their conversations are also very pleasant.

Let's not forget that; Every healthy person is a potential candidate for disability. We do not know what life will bring us or what we will encounter. It is one of the greatest favors that can be done to people with special statuses to accept that they are individuals who can contribute to the life of society instead of abusing them and taking advantage of them in various ways.

Life, with its bitter and sweet, is beautiful for every living thing.

Thank you for reading.

The part 'We do not know what life might bring to us' really got me.. life is a circle with different surprise edges and we don't know how surprisingly each edges is going to be, maybe it will be flat and give easy access or if it would be rough with different bumps or the fact that it'll be flat then get rough all of a sudden, vice versa.
