Neglected Importance of Land Snails

Every animals, insects, or any living organisms have roles in our ecosystem. Ecosystem is the complex of living organism or community of organisms together with their physical environment.

Bees are powerful pollinators, squirrels help trees take root, lizards and spiders eats small insects such as mosquitoes and flies but did you ever wonder, what about land snails?

Every morning while I'm taking a short walk in our yard, I always found land snails or garden snails on small branches of plants especially after the rain.

Land snails are commonly found if you have a lawn or a garden. They live all over the world in soil (or dirt), sand, trees, under rocks or leaves.

Some people were disgusted when they saw a snail climbing up their walls leaving a slimy mucus on its path. Land snail were considered as pests too and vectors of diseases. These tiny crawling creatures often get rid of by humans, they're being killed easily because of their size.

But did you know that land snails have importance too?

Land snails have an important role in the ecosystem. They eat very low on the food web.

Land snails are great cleaners. Typically, land snails consume decaying plant matters, and lay their eggs in the soil. In addition to being great cleaners, their waste is rich in nitrogen and mineral's meaning that any grass or plants will have increased nutrition.

They also provide food for all sorts of mammals, birds, slow worms, earthworms, insects and they are part of the natural balance.

Some species of fireflies consume snails exclusively during their larval stage.

Lots of birds rely on snails for enough calcium they provide.

If you love birds, lizards, fireflies and any other animals, remember that there are snails who support their places on the food web.
