FOODlog #62: Maggi Goreng Mamak
This is a super popular dish here in Malaysia and can be found at any 'mamak' restaurant. We call these restaurants 'mamak' as it's Indian Muslims that operate these local restaurants and they serve all sorts of Malaysian local favorites like 'Nasi Lemak', various types of 'roti' and also fried instant noodles which we call 'maggi goreng'.
The name comes from the brand of instant noodles called 'maggi' and the word 'goreng' which means fried. So it's basically fried noodles that is cooked with some vegetables like cabbage, onions, garlic, birds eye chili, some taufu, eggs, and seasoned with the packet seasoning that comes with the instant noodle itself and also some dark soy sauce, and salt and MSG to taste.
It's one of the dishes I grew up eating since a teenager and it's become like one of our national dishes. It's savory and also spicy with slightly curry-like flavor in the noodles. The garlic gives it a nice aroma and the onions give it a lovely sweetness together with all the spices makes it so aromatic. It's cooked in a wok on an open flame where you also get the charred aroma because of it cooking on such a high heat.
I had this one here from a place located at my friend's condo. We went for basketball after which we had dinner at this place. It was tasty and cooked well. Really satisfying and yummy, a must-try if you're ever visiting Malaysia.
