FOODlog #344: Malaysian Chili Pan Mee
A couple of Sundays ago, my friends and family and I went for lunch as we always do, at a place nearby where I live. It's a hawker area where there are various stalls of food to choose from.
That place has items like chicken rice, pan mee noodles, wantan mee, char Kuey teow and also economy mix rice. If you don't know the dishes above, these are local Malaysian dishes that's a staple to many locals.
For my lunch, I ordered a bowl of 'chili pan mee'. It's a noodle dish that's topped with chili flakes, black Fungus, shiitaki mushrooms, some minced pork, and fried anchovies. The topping does vary from place to place and the unique item on this one is the black Fungus. Most places have a poached egg but this didn't have that.
It was served with a bowl of soup with pork meatballs and spinach. The broth was flavorful and the meatballs were delicious.
The noodles however were way too spicy for my liking and so overpowering you couldn't taste any other item in the bowl. The texture of the noodles were spot on but it was a shame that the chili made everything not so enjoyable.
If I ever order this again from this stall, I'll be sure to tell them to separate the chili so I can take the amount that is good for me.
