FOODlog #126: MASSIVE 5kg Highland Patin Fish!
After a very horrible lunch on Sunday, immediately I had one of the most memorable meals ever with some of my friends. One of our friends of 10+ years is going back to his hometown for work and he had a meal together before he went back. He's been a great person to me and not just someone who has been around so it was really great that we got to share a meal together.
We went to Bentong to a restaurant called 'Wonderland Valley'. It is in a secluded area along the highland waters which is very calming and a scenic environment of nature as you dine on Chinese cooked dishes.
We had some super delicious food at the place and what made it memorable was the steamed fish we had which was cooked 2 ways. It was the biggest fish I've ever eaten in my life. A 5kg highland Patin fish that was cut in half and cooked 2 different ways. One half was steamed with ginger and the other was cooked with soy sauce. It was such an experience with friends and I kid you not, the fillet was 2 inches thick and all of us ate till we were stuffed! The fish itself cost us RM500/+- $120 USD (RM10/kg) which I thought for the price was reasonable seeing that it fed over 16+ of us.
We also ordered some other dishes like Iberico Pork Ribs, Wild Boar Curry, Stir Fried Sweet Potato Leaves, Pork fallopian tube (yes we Chinese are "weird"), Tofu, and one of my other favorite dishes of the night, stir fried French beans with roasted pork belly.
The Pork fallopian tube was really special. We thought it was pork intestine which is more commonly found at Chinese restaurants. I then described it to my father later on and he said it's not pork intestine and the way it tasted and it's slightly crunchy mouthfeel was confirmed by my dad that it was indeed the female pig's fallopian tube. It was delicious and I do recommend it to those adventurous enough to try something exotic.
The French beans were a more premium type where its thinner than the usual French beans we are used to. It's less fibrous and has a nice snap and crunch to it. The pork belly that it was cooked with was super delicious and one of the best roasted pork belly I've ever tasted.
We ate all of this white rice and what a wonderful meal shared with precious people.
