Liver steatosis is the most frequent liver disease today, affecting
approximately 30% of the entire world population. It is characterized by
the excessiveaccumulation of fat (lipids) in the liver. It can be caused
by the chronic consumption of alcoholic beverages, but it can also be
related to some risk factors, in this case being called Non-Alcoholic
Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD).
The vast majority of patients have no signs or symptoms.

Steatosis can remain stable for many years, as long as the factors that
lead to the accumulation are controlled, otherwise it can progress to
steatohepatitis, 5which is inflammation and cell death, leading to fibrosis
(scarring), which in turn can progress to cirrhosis and cancer
(hepatocellular carcinoma - HCC).
