Pressure: A Friend or An Enemy?

7 35

Hi, I am idle here for four days since we do not have money to load for our wifi last Saturday and also I am very busy because we had our preliminary exam last Saturday. And then I continued to make our thesis cause I am the only one doing it, my co-members were busy in their lives but they also had contributed like an act of service on graphing our results in excel and the other one is handling the errands at our university in research publishing office. And then I have been reviewing for this coming Certified Tax Technician Exam, and hopefully I can pass it so that the money for registration will not go for nothing.

As you can see, my life right now is somewhat heated by pressure. With that, I just wanna share to you a poem I made, in which I made for my cousin last Sunday night since they were tasked to make a poem about pressure. She said she still had loads of tasks to do and she will prepare for their report afterwards, so she reached out to me cause she knew that I know how to make a poem. And it goes like this:

An Advice to My Younger Self

It's already late at night when I finished the project given to us,

The last task to be submitted for tomorrow's class,

It's all about finding your childhood picture,

And craft it creatively to make a wonderful brochure,

It must contain a letter inside to your younger self,

If what piece of advice can I give so I have to delve.

A pretty kid with an innocent smile softened my heart,

There are many things that I wanted to tell you through art,

I want to introduce to you a friend that can make you suffer,

That friend who can make things tougher as you grew older,

And I want to name that friend of mine "Pressure" and hey,

He's a friend that can also be your lifetime enemy someday.

He's a friend because he can help you to save time,

He will hone you to stay focus and complete tasks on a dime,

In any projects he can also help you to preserve your interest,

Yet as an enemy he will drown yourself with too much stress,

Which will make you breathe nothing but tiredness and anxiety,

But I tell you no matter what happens, always choose him

as your friend sweetie.

You see, pressure is everywhere and inevitable in our everyday life, you and I tend to experience it everyday. But as you can perceive on my poem, I have considered pressure as two persons, a friend and an enemy. Certainly, pressure can be our friend because it will help us to be productive and sometimes it can also help to motivate us to persevere and finish our tasks on time. The ability to work under pressure as I can notice, is one of the abilities that an employer looked for an employee to work with their company.

Nevertheless, it can also be our lifetime nemesis. People who are too chained with pressure tend to to experience stress everyday. Most especially if they don't know how to handle it and they do not have any coping mechanism on it. The inability to overcome this and can cause mental fatigue, affects the quality of your work, loses their emotional balance and effects to health problems by the stress at work.

There are many factors that influence pressure to a certain person, which are categorized by two such as the internal and external pressure. Internal pressure comes from you inner self when you failed to accomplish something and then you push your limit in your next try or you simply pressure yourself that much just to get your job done perfectly. And then the external pressure comes from different social aspects. And these are:

  1. Peer Pressure– usually this comes from your peers for example is if your friends are all well-off except you, or if they are all outstanding students and yet you keep on failing your exams, they all are successful person but you still find it hard to look for a job and others. These things may give you some anxiety and will stress you out through thinking what's lacking on you? Why can not you be like them ? This may even lower your self-esteem and confidence in yourself.

  2. Family Pressure– from the word itself, it's a pressure that comes from your family. Such as when your parents pressure you to have high grades and you must do well in your school, and then they would get mad when you failed, more importantly when they are too much strict to you that deprived you from your social life. It can also be from your siblings, most especially when they frequently compare you to your younger sister or eldest sister.

  3. Social Pressure– I do not know exactly what should be the term for this but some example for this is the pressure you get from the society like the trend and social norms, or from your school, workplace and others. Especially nowadays, bashing can happen in just one click away, so if you are a person who wanted to please everyone, pressure could really haunt you down.

How to overcome pressure?

Well, when pressure can be our enemy take note that it can also be our friend it is up to you if how will you consider pressure, a friend or an enemy? Dwelling the feeling of getting pressured must not be prolonged cause it can ruin you as a person, more importantly it can make you lose your own self. So let me share to you some of my ways to overcome pressure.

  1. Take a break.

  2. Always look at the brighter side.

  3. Do the things you love.

  4. Use your coping mechanism.

  5. Know your worth.

  6. Stop trying to fit in and please others.

  7. Love yourself.

  8. Wear your smile.

  9. Exercise

  10. Meditate

  11. Just enjoy what you do.

  12. Practice self-talk.

  13. Atleast give yourself a healthy sleep.

  14. Have fun, cause you only live once.

  15. Pray or communicate to God often.

These are just some of the things that I do when I feel pressure in myself. Always put on your mind, life is too short to let yourself be overcome with pressures in life. As Robert Schuller quoted, "Tough times never last, but tough people do."

When i know that i am going to face a tough day , i pray then talk to myself saying " let's take it slow girl , you can do it! fight!" . I also pause for a while , take a break and rest my mind and body. Sometimes i run or walk then go back again to where i left to face it once again. Breath and don't let it Press U Really hard.
