Splinterlands Look-Alike Part 1 - The Serpentine Soldier

0 67

Hello Warriors from the Splinterlands! It has been a while since I made my last blog. How's everyone doin? Hope you are safe and healthy.

In this article on Splinterlands, I have decided to start a series of comparing Splinterland monsters and units with other characters. In this maiden post of mine, I will talk about my observations about characters from other games, lore, anime, and even myths that have resemblance or similarities with Splinterland monsters and units.

My aim is to have some fun in comparing these characters. It is not to point out that one or the other is a copy cat. We all get inspired with the ideas another person and it is a human trait that we build upon on what has been built before. And that's perfectly fine, I guess.

So without further delay, let us start with my first Splinterlands Look-Alike blog.

Introducing the Serpentine Soldier

According to Splinterlands' lore, the Serpentine Soldier is the foot soldier of the United Ferexia of the Burning Lands. It is powerful unit, difficult to hit. As a frontline unit, its special ability is physical damage reduction for melee and range units. This card belongs to the Fire Summoner Collection.

This unit has a fierce look and a scary snake-looking appearance. The Serpentine soldier is also armed with a long spear ready to impale any enemy who dare to cross his path. I like the appearance but if I were the artist, I would have given this monster a shield to be consistent with its special ability of physical damage reduction. I would draw it like a Spartan with spear on one hand and a round shield on the other hand.

I love using this card at low mana battle because this is like a weaker version of the Living Lava of the Fire Summoner but with lower mana cost (5). The Serpentine Soldier has 1 damage, 4 speed, 1 armor and 4 HP. For this card to be effective, it has to be supported by monsters with sneak, opportunity or snipe ability so that enemies at the back can be eliminated.

Every time I field this unit, I get a flashback of one of my favorite characters in the Defense of the Ancient (DOTA).

Introducing the Look-Alike

If you have played Warcraft: The Frozen Throne and DOTA before, there is a warrior race called the Naga. The Nagas are formidable opponents in Azeroth. They have strong frontline warriors and powerful magic users. They were once part of the Elven Society who were transformed into serpentine like beings by the Old Gods. With their transformation, they acquired ability to dwell underwater and they built their kingdom there, out of reach of surface dwellers.

For over thousands of years, they have remained hidden, but they answered the call of Illidan Stormrage to service in the Warcraft III. In Dota, there is a strong and powerful Naga warrior that looks like the Serpentine Soldier. His name is Slandar.

There is another another Naga Warrior in DOTA but this one is a Naga Siren. It is also a melee unit but the appearance and playstyle is very much different with the Serpentine Warrior. This is the reason I am more comfortable in comparing the Serpentine Soldier with Slandar.

Slardar is a strong melee hero who equally can use physical force and magic to defeat his enemy. His favorite weapon is a two-handed hammer which he uses to stun and crush enemies. He has unique ability that can increase his speed and mobility, stun his enemy and an Area of Effect skill that can damage units nearby. His magic also allows him to reduce the armor of the enemy to further increase the damage of his devastating blow.

Despite being a powerful melee attacker, Slandar need to be supported with high damage units either a range unit, magic user unit or another melee unit.

Insights

There are definitely similarities of the two units. The most striking resemblances are the appearance, weapon, and playstyle. There is also similarity with the lore. The Serpentine unit and Naga units are both described in lore as belonging to Warrior races.

Because the Warcraft III came before Splinterlands, I am inclined to believe that Warcraft has inspired the lore of Splinterlands. Hey, that's not a bad thing. Even Warcraft has elements of the book Lord of the Rings but both are equally great works of gaming and literature.

Do you like my article?  Are there really similarities with the Serpentine Warriors and Naga Warriors? Would love to hear your comments below.
