As we all know, kpop industry is booming this days. If you watch any k-pop videos, k-idols are portrayed as rainbows and bubblegum. Unfortunately, ugly truth of it, is being coated with those candy-coated sheens.
From a young age, performers enters to a uncaring and exploitative entertainment world. They grew up like a manufactured products. They experienced being abused in physical and mental way.
From their "boot camp" they have to endure so many hardships including racism, physical and sexual assaults. They are also forced by their agency to do plastic surgeries to achieve that "perfect" look and uphold their aspirational aesthetic.
As per their appearance, idols use to starve theirselves to look more aesthetically pleasing to the fans. Many of them is doing extreme diet. This limited calorie of idols is alarming. They're starving theirselves to match an unrealistic image of perfection.
Because of lacking of proper nutrients and not enough sleep, many idols experienced to collapse when they performing. The effect of starving and pushing their bodies to unhealthy limitations leads to this kind of accidents.
They have only have a little freedom because of their image. They can't date freely and they can't do anything that seems to be "independent"in the realms of politics and one example of this is Tzuyu of Twice who waved the flag of her country.
Idols reportedly are being told by their managers to cut off their communication with other groups specially those who are beneath them. Though they look friendly on public, it is only an act to perpetuate the idols in the eys of their fans.
When it comes to signing a contract, idols is like basically selling their life. This k-pop idols is being controlled by their companies by signing on a contract that is under aĀ multiyear and multifilm contracts and because of this, idols experienced abuse, stringent rules, and relative ownership at the hands of the studios.
Because of this, agencies are taking advantage to this poor idols by making their contracts last for over a decade at times, so if an idol chooses to back out, they need to pay a hefty fee.
Idols, also experience difficulty to break their contracts from their agencies.Music agencies make the idols to stay by blackmailing them. Also, they experience being escorted by their agencies by making contracts between a sponsor and the idol.
Even if their companies is raking with money from the sales of merchandise sales and stadium tickets, companies is not paying their artist fairly for their reason that Idols need to repay for the amount that invested for them. Including staffs, food and music videos. Companies insisting that producing and manufacturing is expensive.
This are the few things that circulating on internet about the dark side of k-pop industry. Clearly some k-pop idols is treated like a product and investment.
